Five practice questions, worked

Original questions written to this exam's published syllabus and pattern. Not past papers.

1. How many links does a 20 m metric chain have, and what is the length of one link?

  1. 200 links of 0.1 m
  2. 150 links of 0.2 m
  3. 100 links of 0.3 m
  4. 100 links of 0.2 m
Answer and working

D. 100 links of 0.2 m

A 20 m metric chain has 100 links, so each link is 20/100 = 0.2 m. The 30 m chain has 150 links of 0.2 m, which is where 150 links comes from; Gunter's chain also has 100 links but is 66 ft long. 200 links of 0.1 m describes a tape graduated in decimetres, not a chain.

2. Under the USDA land capability classification, a field on a 10 percent slope that is cultivable but needs terracing and contour farming to control erosion would be placed in:

  1. Class II with subclass c
  2. Class III or IV with subclass e
  3. Class I with subclass w
  4. Class VIII with subclass s
Answer and working

B. Class III or IV with subclass e

Land capability classes I to IV are cultivable with increasing limitations, and the subclass letter names the limitation: e for erosion. Class I land has few limitations and no subclass; class VIII is not usable for cultivation, grazing or forestry; c is climate and w wetness, neither of which is the stated problem. The exact class (III or IV) depends on local criteria for slope and erodibility.

3. As the temperature rises, how do the viscosities of water and of air change?

  1. Both rise
  2. Water's viscosity falls; air's viscosity rises
  3. Both fall
  4. Water's viscosity rises; air's viscosity falls
Answer and working

B. Water's viscosity falls; air's viscosity rises

In liquids viscosity comes mainly from intermolecular cohesion, which weakens as temperature rises. In gases it comes from molecular momentum exchange, which increases with temperature. So the two trends are opposite.

4. Standard agricultural engineering textbooks commonly take the mechanical power an adult worker can sustain over a working day as roughly:

  1. 0.075–0.1 kW
  2. 0.75–1.0 kW
  3. 7.5–10 W
  4. 0.3–0.4 kW
Answer and working

A. 0.075–0.1 kW

About 0.1 hp, i.e. roughly 75 W, is the usual textbook figure for continuous work; planning studies often use about 0.05 kW. 0.75–1 kW is only reachable for a few seconds in a sprint, and 0.3–0.4 kW is closer to a draught animal's output.

5. Which operation is classed as primary tillage?

  1. Mouldboard ploughing after harvest
  2. Spike-tooth harrowing after ploughing
  3. Planking to crush clods before sowing
  4. Inter-row weeding with a sweep cultivator
Answer and working

A. Mouldboard ploughing after harvest

Primary tillage is the first, deeper operation that cuts and inverts or shatters the soil, done with mouldboard, disc or chisel ploughs. Harrowing and planking are secondary tillage that refine the seedbed, and inter-row weeding after emergence is inter-cultivation.
