Original questions written to this exam's published syllabus and pattern. Not past papers.

1. An ultrasonic level sensor in a water tank works at 40 kHz. Taking the speed of sound in water as 1,480 m/s, what is the wavelength of the sound in the water?

  1. 37.0 mm
  2. 370 mm
  3. 8.6 mm
  4. 3.70 mm
Answer and working

A. 37.0 mm

λ = v/f = 1,480/40,000 = 0.037 m = 37.0 mm. Using the speed in air (343 m/s) gives 8.6 mm, which is the wavelength in air, not in water; 3.70 mm and 370 mm are factor-of-ten unit slips.

2. Varignon's theorem, used to simplify moment calculations, states that:

  1. The moment of a force about a point equals the sum of the moments of its components about that point
  2. Three concurrent forces in equilibrium are each proportional to the sine of the angle between the other two
  3. A force may be slid along its own line of action without changing its external effect on a rigid body
  4. The resultant of two forces is the diagonal of the parallelogram drawn with the two forces as adjacent sides
Answer and working

A. The moment of a force about a point equals the sum of the moments of its components about that point

Varignon's theorem is the principle of moments: resolve the force into components and add their moments. The Lami statement, the principle of transmissibility and the parallelogram law are separate results that are often confused with it.

3. One megapascal (MPa), the unit most used for stress in machine design, is equal to:

  1. 1 N/m²
  2. 1 kN/mm²
  3. 1 N/mm²
  4. 1 kN/cm²
Answer and working

C. 1 N/mm²

1 MPa = 10⁶ N/m² and 1 m² = 10⁶ mm², so 1 MPa = 1 N/mm². That is why working in N and mm gives stress directly in MPa. 1 N/m² is 1 Pa; 1 kN/mm² is 1 GPa; 1 kN/cm² is 10 MPa.

4. A 12 V battery is connected across a lamp whose hot resistance is 4 Ω. Neglecting the battery's internal resistance, what current flows?

  1. 3 A
  2. 16 A
  3. 48 A
  4. 0.33 A
Answer and working

A. 3 A

Ohm's law: I = V/R = 12/4 = 3 A. Multiplying (12 × 4 = 48) gives volts×ohms, which is not a current; 0.33 A is R/V inverted; 16 A adds the numbers.

5. Which description fits a closed system (control mass)?

  1. Energy may cross its boundary as heat or work, but no mass crosses it
  2. Neither mass nor energy in any form is allowed to cross its boundary
  3. Mass may flow across its boundary, but heat and work transfers cannot
  4. Mass and energy both cross its boundary freely, as in a running pump
Answer and working

A. Energy may cross its boundary as heat or work, but no mass crosses it

A closed system has a fixed mass; heat and work can still cross its boundary. Allowing neither mass nor energy describes an isolated system, and mass flowing across the boundary (as in a pump) makes it an open system or control volume.
