Five practice questions, worked

Original questions written to this exam's published syllabus and pattern. Not past papers.

1. A laboratory report on a grass hay shows unusually high total ash and high acid-insoluble ash. The most likely explanation is:

  1. High calcium content from a legume
  2. Soil contamination of the hay
  3. A high content of fat-soluble vitamins
  4. Excessive moisture at baling
Answer and working

B. Soil contamination of the hay

Acid-insoluble ash is mostly silica, and a high value in forage usually means soil. A legume would raise calcium but not acid-insoluble ash.

2. The main role of saliva in rumen function in an adult cow fed long forage is to:

  1. digest starch with large amounts of salivary amylase
  2. supply the main source of rumen-degradable protein
  3. lower rumen temperature during fermentation of grain
  4. buffer rumen acids with bicarbonate and phosphate
Answer and working

D. buffer rumen acids with bicarbonate and phosphate

Ruminant saliva, secreted in large volumes during chewing and rumination, carries sodium bicarbonate and phosphate that neutralise VFAs. Cattle saliva contains little or no amylase, and its urea, though recycled, is not the main protein source.

3. Two clinically normal dogs produce a pup affected with an autosomal recessive disorder. What is the probability that a clinically normal littermate is a carrier?

  1. 1/2
  2. 2/3
  3. 1/4
  4. 3/4
Answer and working

B. 2/3

Both parents must be carriers (Aa x Aa gives 1 AA : 2 Aa : 1 aa). Among normal pups (AA or Aa) the carrier fraction is 2/3. 1/2 is the carrier probability for any pup before its phenotype is known.

4. Hazel and Lush (1942) compared three methods of selecting for several traits. Which order of efficiency, from most to least efficient, did they establish?

  1. Selection index ≥ independent culling levels ≥ tandem selection
  2. Tandem selection ≥ independent culling levels ≥ selection index
  3. Independent culling levels ≥ selection index ≥ tandem selection
  4. All three are equally efficient when traits are uncorrelated
Answer and working

A. Selection index ≥ independent culling levels ≥ tandem selection

The index is never less efficient than independent culling levels, which is never less efficient than tandem selection. Tandem selection is simplest but slowest, and gain in one trait can be lost later through unfavourable correlations. The methods are not equal even for uncorrelated traits.

5. Under the EU rule that raw cow milk must not exceed 400,000 somatic cells/mL as a rolling geometric mean over three months, a farm's monthly results are 250,000, 300,000 and 700,000 cells/mL. What is the assessed value and is the farm compliant?

  1. About 417,000 cells/mL; not compliant
  2. About 374,000 cells/mL; compliant
  3. 700,000 cells/mL; not compliant because one result exceeds the limit
  4. 300,000 cells/mL; compliant
Answer and working

B. About 374,000 cells/mL; compliant

Geometric mean = cube root of (250,000 x 300,000 x 700,000) = 374,444 cells/mL, below 400,000, so compliant. The arithmetic mean (416,667) is the common error and would wrongly fail the farm; the rule is a geometric mean, which damps a single high month. A single result above the limit does not by itself breach a rolling-mean rule, and 300,000 is the median, which the rule does not use.
