Five practice questions, worked

Original questions written to this exam's published syllabus and pattern. Not past papers.

1. Which bond links the glucose units of cellulose?

  1. beta-1,4 glycosidic bond
  2. alpha-1,4 glycosidic bond
  3. alpha-1,6 glycosidic bond
  4. alpha-1,2 glycosidic bond
Answer and working

A. beta-1,4 glycosidic bond

Cellulose is a linear polymer of glucose joined by beta-1,4 bonds, which no vertebrate enzyme can hydrolyse. Alpha-1,4 bonds are found in starch and glycogen chains, alpha-1,6 at their branch points, and alpha-1,2 links glucose and fructose in sucrose.

2. In cattle the polled allele (P) is completely dominant to horned (p). Two heterozygous polled animals are mated. What proportion of their calves is expected to be horned?

  1. 1/2
  2. 3/4
  3. 1/4
  4. 1/16
Answer and working

C. 1/4

Pp x Pp gives 1 PP : 2 Pp : 1 pp. Only pp calves are horned, so 1/4. 3/4 is the proportion polled, the commonest slip.

3. On which strand is DNA synthesised discontinuously as Okazaki fragments?

  1. The leading strand
  2. The lagging strand
  3. The template for transcription
  4. Both strands equally
Answer and working

B. The lagging strand

DNA polymerase works only 5' to 3'. The strand whose synthesis runs away from the fork is made in short Okazaki fragments, each primed by RNA and joined by ligase.
