Original questions written to this exam's published syllabus and pattern. Not past papers.

1. How many pairs of ribs does the ox normally have?

  1. 18
  2. 13
  3. 14
  4. 12
Answer and working

B. 13

The number of rib pairs equals the number of thoracic vertebrae; the ox formula is C7 T13 L6 S5 Cy18-20, so 13 pairs. 18 is the horse, and 14-15 is the pig.

2. What is the approximate concentration of formaldehyde in 10% neutral buffered formalin?

  1. About 4%
  2. About 1%
  3. About 10%
  4. About 37-40%
Answer and working

A. About 4%

Commercial formalin is a saturated solution of about 37-40% formaldehyde. '10% formalin' means one volume of that stock in nine volumes of buffer, so it contains about 3.7-4% formaldehyde. Answering 10% confuses the dilution of formalin with the concentration of formaldehyde; 37-40% is the undiluted stock; about 1% applies the 1-in-10 dilution to the 10% figure instead of to the stock.

3. For each molecule of ATP hydrolysed, the sodium-potassium ATPase moves which ions?

  1. 3 sodium ions into the cell and 2 potassium ions out
  2. 3 sodium ions out of the cell and 2 potassium ions in
  3. 2 sodium ions out of the cell and 3 potassium ions in
  4. 1 sodium ion out and 1 potassium ion in
Answer and working

B. 3 sodium ions out of the cell and 2 potassium ions in

The pump exports 3 Na+ and imports 2 K+ per ATP, so it moves one net positive charge out and is electrogenic. Reversing the numbers is the usual slip; a 1:1 exchange would be electroneutral.

4. Which cells of the gastric fundic glands secrete hydrochloric acid in mammals?

  1. Chief (peptic) cells
  2. G cells
  3. Mucous neck cells
  4. Parietal (oxyntic) cells
Answer and working

D. Parietal (oxyntic) cells

Parietal cells secrete H+ through the H+/K+ ATPase. Chief cells secrete pepsinogen, not acid; G cells in the antrum secrete gastrin, which stimulates acid secretion but is not acid itself.

Veterinary Physiology II: Digestion, Muscle, Nerve, Endocrinology, Reproduction, Lactation, Growth and Climate · Digestion in monogastric animals

5. Lactose, the sugar of milk, is made of which two monosaccharides?

  1. Glucose and fructose
  2. Galactose and glucose
  3. Glucose and glucose
  4. Galactose and fructose
Answer and working

B. Galactose and glucose

Lactose is galactose beta-1,4 glucose. Glucose plus fructose is sucrose, and two glucose units form maltose.
