गन्धक
Elemental sulphur, S8.
Parthiva · mineral origin · Uparasa
SHODHANA — NO MINERAL DRAVYA IS USED RAW
Melted in ghrita or godugdha and poured through cloth into milk, repeatedly. The classical method removes the arsenic and other impurities that native sulphur carries.
TRADITIONAL VIEW, WITH SAFETY LIMITS
What the texts say Gandhaka does
What the evidence says. Traditional use is extensive. Topical sulphur has genuine modern evidence in scabies and acne; internal Ayurvedic preparations do not carry that evidence across, and this library does not present them as though they did.
Side effects and limits
Purified sulphur is among the better tolerated mineral dravya, and unpurified sulphur is not — the arsenic that native sulphur carries is the reason the shodhana exists. Prolonged internal use causes gastrointestinal upset.
Avoid or ask first: Pitta-predominant conditions and raktapitta.; Pregnancy in medicinal quantity.
A traditional classification, not a recommendation. The full safety record is below.
AS THE CLASSICAL TEXTS AND THE API PRESCRIBE
| Shuddha churna | 125–250 mg |
| Anupana | Ghrita · Dugdha · Madhu |
| Kala | Adhobhakta |
Gandhaka is the partner of parada in kajjali and in every kupipakwa rasa; the matra above is for gandhaka rasayana and similar preparations, not for the yogas where it is a component.
Reported from Sharangadhara Samhita and the Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India. Laisha states what the texts prescribe; it does not recommend. No quantity here is adjusted for a particular person — not for agni, koshtha, bala, age, pregnancy, kidney or liver function, or anything already being taken.

Rasa, guna, virya, vipaka and karma are recorded as the classical texts give them, with the text and section named so a student can open the book and check.
Native sulphur carries arsenic, which is why the shodhana in ghrita or milk is not optional. Industrial sulphur is not shuddha gandhaka.
Elemental sulphur, S8.
A WAY TO REMEMBER IT
Gandhaka is from gandha, smell — the dravya named for the thing you notice first. Sulphur is from the Latin sulpur, the same word the Romans used.
Gandhaka is the second pillar of Rasashastra after parada, and the two together make kajjali, the black sulphide from which most kupipakwa preparations begin. Gandhaka rasayana is its best-known independent use, in kushtha.

| Status | Traditional use is extensive. Topical sulphur has genuine modern evidence in scabies and acne; internal Ayurvedic preparations do not carry that evidence across, and this library does not present them as though they did. |
| The honest gap | Mineral and animal dravya are far less studied than plant dravya, and what study exists is chiefly characterisation and toxicology rather than clinical efficacy. |
Purified sulphur is among the better tolerated mineral dravya, and unpurified sulphur is not — the arsenic that native sulphur carries is the reason the shodhana exists. Prolonged internal use causes gastrointestinal upset.
| Contraindications | Pitta-predominant conditions and raktapitta. Pregnancy in medicinal quantity. |
| Interactions | No specific drug interaction is documented for this dravya. Sulphur is used topically in dermatology and the internal preparations have not been studied for interaction. Any drug taken at the same time — separate by two hours, as for any mineral churna. |
| Pregnancy and breastfeeding | Avoid in medicinal quantity. Topical sulphur is used in pregnancy in modern dermatology; internal mineral preparations are a different question and are not established as safe. |
