Jangama · animal origin

Benefits & side effects

TRADITIONAL VIEW, WITH SAFETY LIMITS

What the texts say Gomutra does

What the evidence says. Claims made for gomutra in the popular press, particularly about cancer, are not supported by clinical evidence. Laisha records the traditional use and does not extend it.

Side effects and limits

Urine is not sterile and cow urine carries enteric organisms; cases of infection have been reported. There is no established clinical evidence for any internal therapeutic claim made for it, and several widely circulated claims — particularly about cancer — are not supported.

Avoid or ask first: Pitta-predominant conditions and raktapitta.; Pregnancy.; Immunosuppression — the infection risk is real.

A traditional classification, not a recommendation. The full safety record is below.

Rasa, guna, virya, vipaka and karma are recorded as the classical texts give them, with the text and section named so a student can open the book and check.

Adulterants and substitutes

Commercial gomutra arka is a distilled product and is not the fresh dravya the texts describe.

Identity

From Cow (Bos indicus). Urine, classically from a healthy cow and used fresh or as arka.

A WAY TO REMEMBER IT

Gomutra is simply go-mutra, cow-urine. The texts describe the mutra of eight animals as eight dravya, and gomutra is the one used most.

What the tradition holds

Gomutra is used as a bhavana drava throughout Rasashastra and internally in kushtha, shotha and krimi. That is what the texts record.

Constituents. A product of Cow (Bos indicus).

What the evidence says

StatusClaims made for gomutra in the popular press, particularly about cancer, are not supported by clinical evidence. Laisha records the traditional use and does not extend it.
The honest gapMineral and animal dravya are far less studied than plant dravya, and what study exists is chiefly characterisation and toxicology rather than clinical efficacy.

Safety

Urine is not sterile and cow urine carries enteric organisms; cases of infection have been reported. There is no established clinical evidence for any internal therapeutic claim made for it, and several widely circulated claims — particularly about cancer — are not supported.

ContraindicationsPitta-predominant conditions and raktapitta.
Pregnancy.
Immunosuppression — the infection risk is real.
InteractionsNo specific drug interaction is documented for this dravya. It has not been studied for interaction.
Diuretics — additive, on the basis of its classical mutrala action.
Pregnancy and breastfeedingNot established as safe. Avoid.
