यशद
Zinc; yashada bhasma is chiefly zinc oxide, ZnO.
Parthiva · mineral origin · Dhatu — one of the puti loha
SHODHANA — NO MINERAL DRAVYA IS USED RAW
Melted and quenched in tila taila, takra, gomutra, kanji and kulattha kwatha in turn, then marana.
TRADITIONAL VIEW, WITH SAFETY LIMITS
Hindi name: Jasad
What the texts say Yashada does
What the evidence says. Zinc's role in health is well established; that evidence belongs to characterised zinc salts and does not transfer to the bhasma without study.
Side effects and limits
Zinc in excess causes copper deficiency, and that is the mechanism that matters — prolonged high zinc intake produces a copper-deficiency anaemia and neuropathy.
Avoid or ask first: Copper deficiency.; Prolonged use without monitoring copper.
A traditional classification, not a recommendation. The full safety record is below.
AS THE CLASSICAL TEXTS AND THE API PRESCRIBE
| Bhasma | 30–125 mg |
| Anupana | Madhu · Ghrita |
| Kala | Adhobhakta |
The classical prameha and netra roga metal.
Reported from Sharangadhara Samhita and the Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India. Laisha states what the texts prescribe; it does not recommend. No quantity here is adjusted for a particular person — not for agni, koshtha, bala, age, pregnancy, kidney or liver function, or anything already being taken.
| Rasa | TiktaKashaya |
| Guna | RukshaLaghu |
| Virya | Sheeta |
| Vipaka | Katu |
| Doshakarma | Kaphapittahara. |
| Upayukta anga | Yashada bhasma |
Yashada is classed among the Dhatu — one of the puti loha. Kharpara is NOT a synonym for Yashada. Kharpara is Rasaka, the zinc ore; Yashada is the metal distilled from it, and Indian metallurgists were doing that distillation at Zawar centuries before the process was known in Europe. The two are an ore and its metal, not two names for one thing.
| English | Zinc |
| Hindi | Jasad |
| Kannada | Yashada |
Rasa, guna, virya, vipaka and karma are recorded as the classical texts give them, with the text and section named so a student can open the book and check.
Kharpara (calamine, zinc carbonate) is a related but distinct dravya and the names are used loosely in the market.
Zinc; yashada bhasma is chiefly zinc oxide, ZnO.
A WAY TO REMEMBER IT
Yashada is from yasha, fame — a late Sanskrit name, because zinc was isolated in India before anywhere else and needed a word. Zawar in Rajasthan is the site of the world's oldest known zinc smelting.
Yashada bhasma is the classical mineral of prameha, and India's priority in zinc metallurgy is a genuine and documented piece of the history.
Constituents. Zinc; yashada bhasma is chiefly zinc oxide, ZnO.
| Status | Zinc's role in health is well established; that evidence belongs to characterised zinc salts and does not transfer to the bhasma without study. |
| The honest gap | Mineral and animal dravya are far less studied than plant dravya, and what study exists is chiefly characterisation and toxicology rather than clinical efficacy. |
Zinc in excess causes copper deficiency, and that is the mechanism that matters — prolonged high zinc intake produces a copper-deficiency anaemia and neuropathy.
| Contraindications | Copper deficiency. Prolonged use without monitoring copper. |
| Interactions | Copper — high zinc intake induces metallothionein and blocks copper absorption; prolonged use causes copper deficiency. Tetracyclines and fluoroquinolones — zinc binds them in the gut. Separate by two hours. Penicillamine — mutual reduction in absorption. |
| Pregnancy and breastfeeding | Zinc is required in pregnancy, but yashada bhasma is not a characterised zinc supplement and is not established as safe. Use a characterised preparation. |
