Dravyaguna

Every dravya — rasa, guna, virya, vipaka, karma and a reference you can check

Dravyaguna is the study of medicinal substances in Ayurveda — what a dravya is, what it tastes of, what it does, which part of it is used, and where that is written down. This is that, as a reference anyone can open.

Each dravya carries its full rasapanchaka: rasa, guna, virya, vipaka and prabhava, with its action on the doshas and the karma the classical texts record. The part used is stated explicitly, because the fruit and the seed of one plant are not the same dravya and confusing them is a documented error.

Every classical claim names the text and the place in it — the samhita or the nighantu, and the sthana and chapter — so it can be opened and checked rather than taken on trust. Where an exact verse could not be confirmed, the section is named instead of a number being invented.

Names are given in sixteen languages, because a dravya somebody cannot name in the language of the market they buy it in is a dravya they cannot identify or buy. Adulterants and common substitutions are stated for the same reason: it is an exam topic, it is a real market problem, and it is usually buried in an appendix.

The botanical identity is matched live against the Global Biodiversity Information Facility rather than copied from a book, and the safety section draws on regulators in more than one country, because they do not always agree and a reader deserves to see that.

It states no dose. Not anywhere, not for any dravya. Dose depends on preparation, on the person and on everything else they are taking, and a number here would be read as an instruction by somebody with nobody to ask. It is a study reference, not a prescription.

Free to read, no account, and each page carries a QR code so it can be printed and still lead back to the source.
