Economic Development and Agricultural Economies of the World2 questions

Five practice questions, worked

Original questions written to this exam's published syllabus and pattern. Not past papers.

1. New Zealand's farm policy reforms of 1984 are studied because:

  1. almost all farm subsidies were removed and the sector restructured and kept growing
  2. a European-style system of guaranteed intervention prices was introduced for dairy
  3. farmland was nationalised and leased back to producers under state contracts
  4. agricultural exports were banned for several years to stabilise domestic food prices
Answer and working

A. almost all farm subsidies were removed and the sector restructured and kept growing

New Zealand removed most farm subsidies and price supports in 1984. After a painful adjustment, land values fell, farms adapted and the sector grew, and its producer support has since been among the lowest in the OECD. The other options describe policies New Zealand did not adopt.
