Five practice questions, worked

Original questions written to this exam's published syllabus and pattern. Not past papers.

1. Five farms in a village report wheat yields of 42, 38, 45, 40 and 35 quintals per hectare. What is the mean yield?

  1. 40 q/ha
  2. 38 q/ha
  3. 42 q/ha
  4. 45 q/ha
Answer and working

A. 40 q/ha

Mean = (42 + 38 + 45 + 40 + 35) / 5 = 200 / 5 = 40 q/ha. 38 is a data value near the centre but is not the mean; 42 would come from dropping the lowest value.

Business Statistics & Quantitative Methods · Measures of central tendency

2. A branch manager rewrites a field officer's report on overdue farm loans so that the figures look better before it goes to the regional office. This is an example of

  1. the grapevine, a form of informal lateral communication
  2. filtering, a barrier common in upward communication
  3. information overload at the receiving regional office
  4. selective perception by the regional office's receiver
Answer and working

B. filtering, a barrier common in upward communication

Filtering is the deliberate manipulation of information so that it appears more favourable to the receiver, and it is typical of upward communication through layers of hierarchy. The grapevine is informal communication; overload and selective perception are receiver-side barriers, whereas here the sender is altering the message.

3. Into how many agro-climatic regions did the Planning Commission of India divide the country for planning purposes?

  1. 20
  2. 127
  3. 10
  4. 15
Answer and working

D. 15

The Planning Commission delineated 15 agro-climatic regions in the late 1980s. Twenty is the number of agro-ecological regions of NBSS&LUP, and about 127 is the number of agro-climatic zones under ICAR's National Agricultural Research Project.

Agriculture & Food Systems (bridge) · Importance of agriculture in the national economy

4. A block where farmers sell most of their paddy to village traders immediately after harvest at low prices, and buy back grain later at higher prices, most clearly shows:

  1. A market dominated by futures trading
  2. Excess marketable surplus caused by high yields
  3. Weak marketing, storage and credit, leading to distress sales
  4. An efficient market with low price spread
Answer and working

C. Weak marketing, storage and credit, leading to distress sales

Selling immediately at harvest and buying back later is the classic sign of distress sale driven by cash needs, lack of storage and lack of credit. It says nothing about high efficiency, and futures trading is not involved.

5. A district grows 50,000 ha of wheat. The recommended seed rate is 100 kg/ha and the seed replacement rate is 35 per cent. What is the market for purchased wheat seed?

  1. 5,000 tonnes
  2. 1,750,000 tonnes
  3. 1,750 tonnes
  4. 175 tonnes
Answer and working

C. 1,750 tonnes

Seed demand = area × seed rate × SRR = 50,000 × 100 × 0.35 = 1,750,000 kg = 1,750 t. Leaving out the SRR gives 5,000 t, which assumes every farmer buys fresh seed; writing the kilogram figure as tonnes is a unit slip. 175 t misplaces the decimal in the SRR (0.035 instead of 0.35).
