Five practice questions, worked

Original questions written to this exam's published syllabus and pattern. Not past papers.

1. A seed-processing business has total assets of 1,250,000 currency units and outside liabilities of 470,000. Using the accounting equation, what is the owner's capital?

  1. 780,000
  2. 1,250,000
  3. 1,720,000
  4. 470,000
Answer and working

A. 780,000

Assets = Liabilities + Capital, so Capital = 1,250,000 − 470,000 = 780,000. Adding the two (1,720,000) confuses the equation's sides.

2. Weekly sales (tonnes) of a feed dealer over five sample weeks are 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12. What is the sample standard deviation (divisor n - 1)?

  1. 2.83 tonnes
  2. 3.16 tonnes
  3. 10.00 tonnes
  4. 2.40 tonnes
Answer and working

B. 3.16 tonnes

Mean = 8; squared deviations 16, 4, 0, 4, 16 sum to 40. Sample variance = 40/4 = 10, so s = sqrt(10) = 3.16. Dividing by n gives the population SD 2.83; 10.00 is the variance, not the SD; 2.40 is the mean absolute deviation.

3. Under current US farm programmes, which instrument sets an effective price floor without government purchasing the crop outright in normal years?

  1. Marketing assistance loans with loan rates
  2. Buffer stock purchases by a national food corporation
  3. A national minimum support price enforced on private traders
  4. Export subsidies
Answer and working

A. Marketing assistance loans with loan rates

Marketing assistance loans let farmers borrow at a loan rate and repay at the lower market price if prices fall, creating a floor. Price Loss Coverage and Agriculture Risk Coverage (2014 Farm Bill) support income. The US does not run a food-corporation buffer or enforce support price on traders.

  1. Euronext Paris (MATIF)
  2. Chicago Board of Trade (CME Group)
  3. Bursa Malaysia Derivatives
  4. ICE Futures Europe
Answer and working

5. The Federal Crop Insurance Corporation of the United States was created by legislation in:

  1. 1980
  2. 1994
  3. 2000
  4. 1938
Answer and working

D. 1938

The Federal Crop Insurance Act of 1938 created the FCIC, first insuring wheat. The 1980 Act brought in private delivery, the 1994 Reform Act introduced catastrophic coverage and the Agricultural Risk Protection Act of 2000 raised subsidies.
