Five practice questions, worked

Original questions written to this exam's published syllabus and pattern. Not past papers.

1. When the price of onions in a town market falls from 40 to 36 per kg, daily sales rise from 500 to 560 kg. Using the midpoint (arc) method, the price elasticity of demand is about

  1. -1.08
  2. -1.2
  3. -0.96
  4. -0.93
Answer and working

A. -1.08

Arc elasticity = (change in Q / average Q) / (change in P / average P) = (60/530) / (-4/38) = -1.08. Using the initial values, (60/500) / (-4/40) = -1.2; using the final values, (60/560) / (-4/36) = -0.96; the midpoint method avoids this dependence on the direction of change. -0.93 divides the price change by the quantity change, inverting the ratio.

2. India is the world's largest producer of which pair of commodities?

  1. Milk and pulses
  2. Sugarcane and maize
  3. Rice and palm oil
  4. Wheat and soybeans

Agriculture & Food Systems (bridge) · Importance of agriculture in the national economy

3. A block where farmers sell most of their paddy to village traders immediately after harvest at low prices, and buy back grain later at higher prices, most clearly shows:

  1. A market dominated by futures trading
  2. Excess marketable surplus caused by high yields
  3. Weak marketing, storage and credit, leading to distress sales
  4. An efficient market with low price spread
Answer and working

C. Weak marketing, storage and credit, leading to distress sales

Selling immediately at harvest and buying back later is the classic sign of distress sale driven by cash needs, lack of storage and lack of credit. It says nothing about high efficiency, and futures trading is not involved.

4. In the seed generation system used in India, the seed class sold to farmers for commercial crop production is

  1. breeder seed
  2. nucleus seed
  3. foundation seed
  4. certified seed
Answer and working

D. certified seed

The chain is nucleus → breeder → foundation → certified. Certified seed is the class multiplied for farmers; breeder and foundation seed are earlier generations used for multiplication.

5. Engel's law explains why agriculture's share of GDP tends to fall as a country develops. The law states that as household income rises,

  1. the food share of income falls
  2. the absolute amount spent on food falls
  3. the share of income spent on food rises
  4. food demand becomes perfectly price-inelastic
Answer and working

A. the food share of income falls

Engel's law concerns the budget share: food spending usually still rises in money terms, but more slowly than income, so its share falls. An absolute fall would make food an inferior good, which is not the general case.
