Over the years

The 2025 CUET (ICAR-UG) information bulletin lists B.Sc. (Hons.) Forestry as programme 04 alongside Agriculture and Horticulture, with seat tables for forestry universities such as Dr YSP University of Horticulture & Forestry (Nauni, Solan) and VCSG Uttarakhand University of Horticulture & Forestry. ICAR AIEEA-UG was replaced by CUET from 2023-24. State quota seats use state entrance tests, not checked here.

Five practice questions, worked

Original questions written to this exam's published syllabus and pattern. Not past papers.

1. Under the FAO Global Forest Resources Assessment definition, forest must have a minimum canopy cover of more than:

  1. 5%
  2. 20%
  3. 10%
  4. 30%
Answer and working

C. 10%

FAO forest: more than 0.5 ha, trees higher than 5 m and canopy cover above 10% (or able to reach these in situ). 5–10% cover with tall trees is other wooded land; 20% and 30% are thresholds some national definitions use.

2. The cohesion–tension theory explains the ascent of sap mainly by:

  1. Root pressure pushing sap up from the roots to the crown
  2. Transpiration pulling a cohesive water column
  3. Capillary rise in narrow vessels without any tension
  4. Active pumping by living xylem cells along the stem
Answer and working

B. Transpiration pulling a cohesive water column

Evaporation from leaves creates tension transmitted down a cohesive column. Root pressure and capillarity cannot lift water to the top of tall trees; mature conduits are dead.

3. Jenny's five soil-forming factors are climate, organisms, relief, time and:

  1. Soil texture
  2. Soil pH
  3. Parent material
  4. Land use
Answer and working

C. Parent material

S = f(cl, o, r, p, t). Texture and pH are soil properties, results of the factors; land use is sometimes added as a human factor.

4. Which surface has the highest albedo?

  1. Conifer forest
  2. Fresh snow
  3. Broadleaf forest
  4. Green grassland
Answer and working

B. Fresh snow

Fresh snow reflects 80% or more; conifer forests about 8–15%, broadleaves 15–20%, grass 20–25%.

Forest Meteorology & Climatology · Atmosphere, radiation balance and energy budget

5. According to FAO's Global Forest Resources Assessment 2020, planted forests make up roughly what share of the world's forest area?

  1. About 30 per cent
  2. About 50 per cent
  3. About 7 per cent
  4. Less than 0.5 per cent
Answer and working

C. About 7 per cent

FRA 2020 reported about 294 million ha of planted forest, roughly 7% of all forest; plantation forests proper were about 131 million ha, roughly 3%. 'About 30%' is closer to their share of industrial roundwood supply, not of area.
