Format

Computer-based, 120 minutes, 120 MCQs, +4 / −1 (pattern recorded from the 2026 bulletin in the Agricultural Engineering track). One paper for the whole Physical Science group.

Sections

Over the years

The official syllabus PDF was read: Major Subject Group 03 Physical Science covers sub-subjects 3.1 Agricultural Meteorology, 3.2 Soil Science / Soil Conservation and Water Management, 3.3 Agricultural Physics, 3.4 Agricultural Chemicals, 3.5 Organic Farming and 3.6 Environmental Science. So an MSc in Environmental Science, Agricultural Meteorology or Organic Farming at an agricultural university is entered through this one paper, which is weighted towards soil science and chemistry rather than ecology. Group 20 Water Science & Technology is a separate paper (water resources, watershed, soil physics). Question papers are not published.

Five practice questions, worked

Original questions written to this exam's published syllabus and pattern. Not past papers.

1. Which outcomes are associated with the 1992 Rio Earth Summit?

  1. The adoption of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals
  2. Agenda 21, the Rio Declaration and the UNFCCC and CBD
  3. The creation of UNEP and the first World Environment Day
  4. The Kyoto Protocol, the Paris Agreement and the Montreal Protocol
Answer and working

B. Agenda 21, the Rio Declaration and the UNFCCC and CBD

Rio produced Agenda 21 and the Rio Declaration and opened the climate and biodiversity conventions for signature. Kyoto (1997), Paris (2015), Montreal (1987), UNEP (1972) and the SDGs (2015) came at other times.

2. The study of a single species in relation to its environment is called

  1. biogeography
  2. palaeoecology
  3. synecology
  4. autecology
Answer and working

D. autecology

Autecology focuses on individual species or populations; synecology on communities and ecosystems.

Ecology & Ecosystem Science · Levels of ecological organisation; autecology and synecology

3. A water sample contains 40 mg/L of calcium (Ca²⁺, atomic mass 40). What is this expressed as mg/L as CaCO3?

  1. 40 mg/L as CaCO3
  2. 100 mg/L as CaCO3
  3. 200 mg/L as CaCO3
  4. 50 mg/L as CaCO3
Answer and working

B. 100 mg/L as CaCO3

Equivalent weight of Ca²⁺ = 40/2 = 20; mg/L as CaCO3 = 40 × 50/20 = 100. 40 forgets conversion; 50 uses the CaCO3 equivalent weight alone; 200 uses the molar mass of CaCO3 over 20.

4. Who coined the term 'rhizosphere' in 1904?

  1. Lorenz Hiltner
  2. Martinus Beijerinck
  3. Sergei Winogradsky
  4. Louis Pasteur
Answer and working

A. Lorenz Hiltner

Hiltner described the root-influenced soil zone; Winogradsky and Beijerinck pioneered soil microbiology.

Environmental Microbiology · Plant-microbe and soil-microbe interactions

5. Jenny's (1941) equation expresses soil as a function of climate, organisms, relief, parent material and:

  1. Tillage
  2. Texture
  3. Temperature only
  4. Time
Answer and working

D. Time

S = f(cl, o, r, p, t). Texture and tillage are outcomes or influences within these factors, not separate state factors.
