Over the years

Syllabus read in ICAR's official AIEEA-PG and AICE-JRF/SRF syllabus PDF. The forestry syllabus is a single dense paragraph covering the whole B.Sc. Forestry, so breadth matters more than depth. Fills a share of Master's seats in agricultural and forestry universities and awards the PG scholarship.

Five practice questions, worked

Original questions written to this exam's published syllabus and pattern. Not past papers.

1. A 2000 ha oil palm estate has trees over 10 m tall and canopy cover above 60%. Under FRA definitions it is:

  1. Forest, because it exceeds every area, height and canopy threshold
  2. Not forest, because it is land predominantly under agricultural use
  3. Other wooded land, because palms are not true trees in botanical terms
  4. Planted forest, because all of the trees were established by planting
Answer and working

B. Not forest, because it is land predominantly under agricultural use

FRA excludes tree crops on agricultural land, such as oil palm, orchards and agroforestry with crops, even when they meet the cover and height thresholds.

2. Which lateral meristem produces wood and inner bark?

  1. Cork cambium
  2. Vascular cambium
  3. Apical meristem
  4. Intercalary meristem
Answer and working

B. Vascular cambium

The vascular cambium adds secondary xylem inward and phloem outward. The cork cambium forms periderm; apical meristems give length; intercalary meristems add length at internode bases.

3. Crocodile-skin bark, deeply cracked into small plates, is characteristic of:

  1. Terminalia arjuna (arjun)
  2. Sterculia urens (kullu)
  3. Boswellia serrata (salai)
  4. Terminalia elliptica
Answer and working

D. Terminalia elliptica

Saja has crocodile bark; arjun smooth pale bark; Sterculia white papery bark; Boswellia papery peeling bark.

4. A leaf cell has solute potential −1.2 MPa and pressure potential +0.5 MPa. Ignoring gravity and matric effects, what is its water potential?

  1. −1.7 MPa
  2. +0.7 MPa
  3. −0.7 MPa
  4. −0.6 MPa
Answer and working

C. −0.7 MPa

Ψ = Ψs + Ψp = −1.2 + 0.5 = −0.7 MPa. −1.7 subtracts the turgor; +0.7 reverses the sign.

Tree Physiology · Water relations: transpiration, cohesion-tension, xylem embolism

5. Which process dominates soil formation on old land surfaces in the hot, humid tropics?

  1. Podzolisation under acid conifer litter
  2. Ferralitisation: loss of silica and bases
  3. Calcification in dry, alkaline conditions
  4. Melanisation under dense grassland roots
Answer and working

B. Ferralitisation: loss of silica and bases

Intense weathering and leaching remove silica and bases, leaving Fe and Al oxides and kaolinite (Ferralsols, Oxisols).
