1 · DC circuits and network theorems · easy

A 12 V battery is connected across a lamp whose hot resistance is 4 Ω. Neglecting the battery's internal resistance, what current flows?

  1. 3 A
  2. 16 A
  3. 48 A
  4. 0.33 A
Answer and working

A. 3 A

Ohm's law: I = V/R = 12/4 = 3 A. Multiplying (12 × 4 = 48) gives volts×ohms, which is not a current; 0.33 A is R/V inverted; 16 A adds the numbers.

2 · DC circuits and network theorems · easy

Three 6 Ω heating elements are connected in parallel. What is the equivalent resistance?

  1. 6 Ω
  2. 18 Ω
  3. 2 Ω
  4. 0.5 Ω
Answer and working

C. 2 Ω

For n equal resistors in parallel R = R/n = 6/3 = 2 Ω. 18 Ω is the series value; 0.5 Ω is the sum of conductances (1/6 × 3 = 0.5 S) quoted without inverting it.

3 · Single-phase and three-phase supply · easy

In a balanced three-phase, four-wire star system, what current flows in the neutral conductor?

  1. Zero, because the three phase currents sum to zero
  2. Three times the phase current
  3. √3 times the phase current
  4. Equal to one phase current
Answer and working

A. Zero, because the three phase currents sum to zero

Three equal currents displaced 120° have a phasor sum of zero, so a perfectly balanced load returns no neutral current. Neutral current appears only when the loads are unbalanced or the currents contain triplen harmonics.

4 · Transformers · easy

A single-phase transformer steps 6600 V down to 220 V. The primary has 1500 turns. How many turns does the secondary have?

  1. 150
  2. 50
  3. 300
  4. 45 000
Answer and working

B. 50

N₂ = N₁ × V₂/V₁ = 1500 × 220/6600 = 50 turns. 45 000 multiplies by the inverse ratio; 150 and 300 are arithmetic slips.

5 · Semiconductor devices and rectifiers · medium

What is the maximum theoretical rectification efficiency of a half-wave rectifier with a resistive load?

  1. 81.2 %
  2. 40.6 %
  3. 121 %
  4. 48.2 %
Answer and working

B. 40.6 %

η = P_dc/P_ac = (V_m/π)²/(V_m/2)² = 4/π² = 40.6 %. 81.2 % is the full-wave value; 48.2 % and 121 % are the full-wave and half-wave ripple factors (0.482 and 1.21) written as percentages.

6 · Semiconductor devices and rectifiers · easy

A transistor has β = 100 and a base current of 40 µA in the active region. What are the collector and emitter currents?

  1. I_C = 4 mA, I_E = 3.96 mA
  2. I_C = 4 mA, I_E = 4 mA
  3. I_C = 0.4 mA, I_E = 0.44 mA
  4. I_C = 4 mA, I_E = 4.04 mA
Answer and working

D. I_C = 4 mA, I_E = 4.04 mA

I_C = βI_B = 100 × 40 µA = 4 mA; I_E = I_B + I_C = 4.04 mA. The emitter current is the largest of the three; subtracting gives an emitter current smaller than the collector current; 0.4 mA is a power-of-ten slip.

7 · Digital logic · easy

What is the binary number 10110110 in decimal and hexadecimal?

  1. 182 and B6
  2. 109 and 6D
  3. 182 and C6
  4. 181 and B5
Answer and working

A. 182 and B6

128 + 32 + 16 + 4 + 2 = 182; grouping in fours, 1011 = B and 0110 = 6, so B6. 109 and 6D read the bits in reverse order; C6 mis-groups the upper nibble; 181 and B5 are off by one.

8 · Digital logic · easy

Why are NAND and NOR called universal gates?

  1. They work with both TTL and CMOS supply voltages unchanged
  2. Their outputs are 1 for every combination of the inputs
  3. Every logic function is realisable with either type alone
  4. They have the shortest propagation delay of all gate types
Answer and working

C. Every logic function is realisable with either type alone

NOT, AND and OR can each be made from NAND gates only (or NOR gates only), so any Boolean function can be built. Universality is a logical property, not a speed or logic-family property.

9 · House wiring and earthing · easy

A miniature circuit breaker (MCB) trips by two mechanisms. Which pairing is correct?

  1. Bimetal for overload; magnetic coil for short circuit
  2. Electronic residual sensing for both overload and short circuit
  3. Bimetal for earth leakage; magnetic coil for overload
  4. Magnetic coil for overload; bimetal for short circuit
Answer and working

A. Bimetal for overload; magnetic coil for short circuit

A bimetallic strip heats and bends slowly under sustained overload (inverse-time trip); the magnetic coil trips instantly on the very high current of a short circuit. Earth-leakage sensing is the RCD's job, not a standard MCB's.

Taking a wet person's body-path resistance as 1000 Ω, what current flows on contact with a 230 V supply?

  1. 4.35 mA
  2. 0.23 mA
  3. 23 mA
  4. 230 mA
Answer and working

D. 230 mA

I = V/R = 230/1000 = 0.23 A = 230 mA — many times the few tens of milliamperes that can cause ventricular fibrillation. 0.23 mA is the same number misread as milliamperes; 4.35 mA inverts V/R; 23 mA would need a body resistance of 10 kΩ. Real body resistance varies widely with skin condition and contact area.
