What this subject covers

Fish-pond and recirculating-system design, and forest roads and logging machinery — examined where the law puts them in the profession's scope, as in the Philippines.

In the exams: PRC ABE (RA 10915 §17 lists aquaculture engineering and forest engineering); an aquacultural engineering discipline at IIT Kharagpur (secondary source)

1 · Aquaculture pond design · easy

On a pond farm, why is each pond normally given its own inlet from a supply canal and its own outlet to a separate drainage canal?

  1. So that water can flow through all ponds in series and be reused before discharge
  2. So that wind blowing along the supply canal aerates the water before it enters
  3. So that the total length of dikes on the farm is reduced to the smallest value
  4. So that each pond is filled and drained alone, with no pond-to-pond flow
Answer and working

D. So that each pond is filled and drained alone, with no pond-to-pond flow

Independent supply and drainage limit disease spread and let each pond be managed separately. Series flow does the opposite, and the arrangement adds rather than saves dike length.

2 · Aquaculture pond design · easy

In Darcy's law written as q = k i for seepage from a pond, the symbol i stands for

  1. the intensity of rainfall falling on the pond surface in mm/h
  2. the inflow rate of make-up water pumped into the pond in L/s
  3. the infiltration rate measured with a double-ring infiltrometer
  4. the hydraulic gradient, head loss divided by flow path length
Answer and working

D. the hydraulic gradient, head loss divided by flow path length

i is the dimensionless hydraulic gradient. Infiltration rate, rainfall intensity and inflow are different quantities.

3 · Aquaculture pond design · medium

A pond outlet consists of a concrete box open on the pond side, with grooves in which boards are stacked to set the water level and a screen in front. This structure is called

  1. a monk
  2. a siphon spillway
  3. a turn-down pipe
  4. a drop inlet chute
Answer and working

A. a monk

The monk sets the level by its top board and can draw water from the pond bottom. A turn-down pipe is an elbow rotated to set the level; siphon spillways and drop inlets are flood-passing structures.

4 · Water exchange in ponds · medium

A 5,000 m³ pond is given 10 percent water exchange per day as a continuous inflow. What inflow rate is needed?

  1. 13.9 L/s
  2. 5.8 L/s
  3. 58 L/s
  4. 0.58 L/s
Answer and working

B. 5.8 L/s

500 m³/day ÷ 86,400 s = 0.00579 m³/s = 5.8 L/s. 58 and 0.58 L/s are decimal slips; 13.9 L/s would deliver the 500 m³ in a 10-hour pumping day, not as a continuous inflow.

5 · Water exchange in ponds · medium

A pond receives a steady ammonia-nitrogen load of 5 kg/day that is removed only by flushing with ammonia-free water. What flushing flow keeps the pond at 1 mg/L at steady state?

  1. 50,000 m³/day
  2. 5,000 m³/day
  3. 500 m³/day
  4. 5 m³/day
Answer and working

B. 5,000 m³/day

At steady state C = Cin + P/Q, so Q = P/C = 5,000,000 mg/day ÷ 1 mg/L = 5,000,000 L/day = 5,000 m³/day. The others are factor-of-ten unit slips. 50,000 and 500 m³/day are factor-of-ten slips; 5 m³/day is a factor-of-1,000 slip (litres read as cubic metres).

6 · Aeration of ponds · medium

Pond water has total ammonia nitrogen of 2.0 mg/L at pH 8.5. Taking pKa = 9.25 for the pond temperature, what is the un-ionised ammonia nitrogen concentration?

  1. 0.36 mg/L
  2. 1.00 mg/L
  3. 0.30 mg/L
  4. 1.70 mg/L
Answer and working

C. 0.30 mg/L

f = 1/(1 + 10^(9.25 − 8.5)) = 1/(1 + 5.62) = 0.151; NH3-N = 2.0 × 0.151 = 0.30 mg/L. 0.36 uses 10^(−0.75) as the fraction; 1.70 is the ionised part; 1.00 is the answer only at pH = pKa.

7 · Aeration of ponds · easy

Which material is applied to acidic, low-alkalinity fish ponds to raise total alkalinity?

  1. Copper sulfate
  2. Sodium chloride
  3. Agricultural limestone
  4. Ammonium sulfate fertiliser
Answer and working

C. Agricultural limestone

Agricultural limestone (calcium carbonate) raises alkalinity and buffers pH. Ammonium sulfate is acid-forming; copper sulfate is an algicide; sodium chloride adds chloride, not alkalinity.

8 · Recirculating aquaculture systems · easy

In a recirculating aquaculture system, the biofilter's main function is to

  1. add oxygen to the water by contact with pure oxygen gas
  2. convert ammonia to nitrate by nitrifying bacteria growing on media
  3. remove suspended solids by straining them through fine screens
  4. strip carbon dioxide by contact with a counter-current of air
Answer and working

B. convert ammonia to nitrate by nitrifying bacteria growing on media

Nitrification in the biofilter oxidises ammonia to nitrite and nitrate. Screening, oxygenation and degassing are separate unit processes.

9 · Recirculating aquaculture systems · easy

A 30 m³ fish tank receives 1 m³/min of treated water. What is its hydraulic retention time?

  1. 30 min
  2. 30 h
  3. 0.5 h⁻¹
  4. 2 min
Answer and working

A. 30 min

Retention time = V/Q = 30/1 = 30 min, i.e. two exchanges per hour. 2 is the exchange rate per hour, 0.5 h⁻¹ is an inverted rate, and 30 h confuses minutes with hours.

10 · Recirculating aquaculture systems · easy

In a moving-bed bioreactor (MBBR), the nitrifying bacteria grow on

  1. the walls of the fish tank, cleaned once a week by brushing
  2. a fixed bed of gravel through which water is pumped upward
  3. plastic carriers kept in suspension and circulation in the reactor
  4. fine sand fluidised by an upflow of water in a column
Answer and working

C. plastic carriers kept in suspension and circulation in the reactor

MBBR carriers move freely in an aerated or mixed tank. Fixed gravel beds, tank walls and fluidised sand are other biofilm arrangements.
