1 · Normal, empirical and variable-density yield tables · medium

A managed-stand yield table differs from a normal table because it:

  1. Lists yields for unthinned, fully stocked stands only
  2. Lists yields for stands of every possible density, from open to fully stocked
  3. Lists yields only for uneven-aged selection forests
  4. Lists main-crop and thinning yields for one stated thinning regime
Answer and working

D. Lists main-crop and thinning yields for one stated thinning regime

Managed-stand tables, such as British management tables, follow a defined thinning regime and separate thinnings from the main crop.

2 · Self-thinning rule and density management diagrams · easy

A manager wants to keep a plantation fully using the site without competition mortality. Using Long's thresholds, the relative density should be kept roughly between:

  1. 0% and 25% of maximum SDI
  2. 35% and 60% of maximum SDI
  3. 60% and 100% of maximum SDI
  4. 25% and 35% of maximum SDI
Answer and working

B. 35% and 60% of maximum SDI

Above about 35% the site is fully occupied; above about 60% self-thinning mortality begins. Keeping stands between these uses the site while avoiding loss to mortality.

3 · Whole-stand models · medium

A projection system is path invariant when:

  1. It predicts the same volume on all sites at the same age
  2. Projecting directly from age 10 to 30 equals projecting 10 to 20 then 20 to 30
  3. Its growth equations were all fitted by ordinary least squares
  4. It projects basal area forward in time but never backward to an earlier age
Answer and working

B. Projecting directly from age 10 to 30 equals projecting 10 to 20 then 20 to 30

Path invariance means the result does not depend on the number of steps. It is a desirable property alongside compatibility.

4 · Diameter-distribution models · medium

Diameter-distribution models are least suited to which stands?

  1. Mixed or recently thinned stands with irregular, multimodal distributions
  2. Even-aged plantations whose diameters follow smooth, unimodal, near-symmetric curves
  3. Unthinned single-species stands of one age
  4. Stands whose diameters closely follow a Weibull curve
Answer and working

A. Mixed or recently thinned stands with irregular, multimodal distributions

Simple unimodal distributions cannot represent irregular, multimodal diameter structures without more flexible methods.

5 · Individual-tree distance-independent and distance-dependent models · medium

Mortality in individual-tree models is usually modelled as:

  1. A fixed percentage of trees removed every year in every stand
  2. A probability of death, often by logistic regression
  3. A fixed percentage of trees, commonly 1%, removed every year in every stand
  4. A function of tree species alone, ignoring size and competition
Answer and working

B. A probability of death, often by logistic regression

Survival or death is binary, so a probability model (often logistic on size, growth, crown ratio and competition) is fitted to remeasured plot data.

6 · Process-based and hybrid models · medium

A hybrid growth model typically:

  1. Combines two yield tables from different countries
  2. Uses only remote sensing, with no field data
  3. Adds physiologically based modifiers to an empirical growth model
  4. Replaces all equations with expert opinion
Answer and working

C. Adds physiologically based modifiers to an empirical growth model

Hybrids keep empirical accuracy while adding climate or soil sensitivity through process-based terms.

7 · Model fitting, validation and projection · medium

The most common cause of serious error when using a growth model is:

  1. Extrapolation beyond the ages, sites or densities in its data
  2. Rounding diameters to the nearest centimetre instead of the nearest millimetre
  3. Using metric rather than imperial units
  4. Using a computer rather than printed tables
Answer and working

A. Extrapolation beyond the ages, sites or densities in its data

Models are reliable only within the range of their data; extrapolation leads to the largest errors.
