1 · End-of-manual check · medium

A patient has swelling of one leg only. What does the pattern suggest?

  1. A local problem in that leg's venous return
  2. Heart failure affecting the whole circulation
  3. Low protein in the blood from poor nutrition
  4. Kidney failure with fluid retention in the tissues
Answer and working

A. A local problem in that leg's venous return

General causes such as heart failure, kidney failure and low blood protein affect the whole body and produce swelling in both legs. Swelling confined to one leg points instead at something obstructing return from that leg specifically.

2 · What Anatomy Is For · medium

Pain that starts around the navel and moves to the lower right abdomen follows what?

  1. The nerve supply of the appendix as inflammation reaches the wall
  2. The path of food moving through the small intestine during digestion
  3. The route of blood flowing from the heart to the right leg
  4. The movement of the liver as the patient changes position
Answer and working
