1 · Production = area x yield: the statistical structure · medium

A district's crop area is estimated with a CV of 2% and its yield, independently, with a CV of 4%. What is the approximate CV of estimated production?

  1. 4.47%
  2. 6.00%
  3. 4.00%
  4. 8.00%
Answer and working

A. 4.47%

For a product of independent estimates, CV(P)^2 is about CV(A)^2 + CV(Y)^2 = 4 + 16 = 20, so CV(P) is about 4.47%. Adding CVs (6.00%) overstates it; multiplying them has no basis.

2 · Area statistics: complete enumeration, sample-based (EARAS, TRS) and area-frame methods · medium

The EARAS scheme was set up mainly for states that:

  1. Have the most accurate land records and need no further checks
  2. Grow only horticultural crops that cannot be crop-cut normally
  3. Lack village land records for complete area enumeration
  4. Have no crop-cutting experiments for estimating crop yields
Answer and working

C. Lack village land records for complete area enumeration

EARAS (Establishment of an Agency for Reporting Agricultural Statistics) created staff to enumerate area in a sample of villages in states, historically the permanently settled areas, without village land records.

3 · Plot size, shape and border bias in crop-cutting · easy

Why do very small crop-cutting plots tend to overestimate yield?

  1. Small plots suffer more bird damage, which raises recorded yield
  2. Doubtful border plants get included; small plots have more border
  3. Small plots are harvested later, when grain has gained more weight
  4. Small plots are always located in the most fertile parts of fields
Answer and working

B. Doubtful border plants get included; small plots have more border

Border bias: investigators tend to include doubtful boundary plants, and the boundary-to-area ratio is larger for small plots.

4 · Estimation of yield and its standard error at district and state level · medium

Three tehsils have rice areas of 30,000, 20,000 and 50,000 ha and mean yields of 2.8, 3.4 and 2.5 t/ha. What is the district yield?

  1. 3.40 t/ha
  2. 2.77 t/ha
  3. 2.61 t/ha
  4. 2.90 t/ha
Answer and working

B. 2.77 t/ha

District yield = sum(area x yield)/sum(area) = 277000/100000 = 2.77 t/ha. The simple average 2.90 ignores that the largest tehsil has the lowest yield.

5 · Estimation of yield and its standard error at district and state level · medium

How is a state's average yield of a crop obtained from district figures?

  1. The simple average of district yields
  2. The median of the district yields in the state
  3. The highest district yield recorded that year
  4. State production divided by state area
Answer and working

D. State production divided by state area

State production is the sum of district productions; dividing by state area gives an area-weighted yield, not the simple mean of district yields.

6 · Improvement of Crop Statistics (ICS) scheme and quality checks · easy

What is the main purpose of the Improvement of Crop Statistics (ICS) scheme?

  1. Estimating crop prices in regulated markets every week
  2. Running the agricultural census of holdings every five years
  3. Sample checks of area records and supervision of crop-cutting
  4. Conducting all crop-cutting experiments in every Indian state
Answer and working

C. Sample checks of area records and supervision of crop-cutting

Under ICS, central and state supervisors check crop inspection in a sub-sample of TRS villages and supervise a sub-sample of CCEs to detect and correct errors.

7 · Improvement of Crop Statistics (ICS) scheme and quality checks · medium

Which agency supplies central supervisors for ICS sample checks in India?

  1. The India Meteorological Department
  2. The National Statistical Office's field operations
  3. The Food Corporation of India's district procurement staff
  4. The Reserve Bank of India
Answer and working

B. The National Statistical Office's field operations

NSO (formerly NSSO) field operations staff, with state supervisors, carry out ICS checks.

8 · Crop-cutting for crop insurance: number of CCEs and technology-assisted CCEs · hard

The threshold yield of an insurance unit is 1.92 t/ha and the crop-cutting yield this season is 1.5 t/ha. What percentage of the sum insured is payable?

  1. 42.0%
  2. 78.1%
  3. 21.9%
  4. 28.0%
Answer and working

C. 21.9%

Claim share = (threshold - actual)/threshold = (1.92 - 1.5)/1.92 = 21.9%. Dividing by actual yield gives 28.0%; 78.1% is actual yield as a share of threshold.

9 · Estimation of crop losses due to pests and diseases · medium

What is the main difficulty in estimating losses due to one particular pest?

  1. Separating it from other pests, weather and management
  2. Yields cannot be measured in fields with pests
  3. Loss surveys cannot use random sampling of fields
  4. Pests never affect crop yield in measurable ways
Answer and working

A. Separating it from other pests, weather and management

Yield reductions have many causes acting together, so attributing loss to one pest requires careful design or modelling.

10 · International practice: FAO guidelines and objective yield surveys · medium

What is the purpose of the 50x2030 Initiative?

  1. Raising crop yields by 50% before the year 2030
  2. Building integrated agricultural survey systems
  3. Reducing the number of crop-cutting experiments by half
  4. Replacing censuses of agriculture with satellite data
Answer and working

B. Building integrated agricultural survey systems

50x2030 supports low- and middle-income countries in building agricultural data systems that combine surveys and other sources.
