Choose an answer, then open the working. Each explanation says why the right answer is right and why the others are not.
On a surface texture symbol, what does a horizontal bar closing the basic tick symbol indicate?
A. Material removal by machining is required
The bar closing the symbol requires material removal. A circle inside the symbol prohibits removal (leave as cast, forged or rolled). The basic open symbol alone allows any process.
A right square pyramid has a base side of 60 mm and a vertical height of 80 mm. In its development, what is the true length of each slant edge?
A. 90.6 mm
The slant edge runs from the apex to a corner, which is half the base diagonal from the axis: 60√2/2 = 42.43 mm. So edge = √(80² + 42.43²) = 90.6 mm. √(80² + 30²) = 85.4 mm is the slant height of a face (apex to mid-side), not the edge. Using the full 60 mm base side as the horizontal offset gives √(80² + 60²) = 100.0 mm.
Which key allows a hub to slide axially along a shaft while still transmitting torque?
C. Feather key
A feather (parallel) key is fixed to the shaft or hub and permits axial sliding. A taper key and gib-head key lock the hub axially by wedging; a saddle key relies on friction and cannot slide reliably under torque.
On an assembly drawing, what is the purpose of the numbered circles (balloons) attached to the parts by leaders?
B. They give each part an item number that refers to the parts list
Balloons carry item numbers that link each part to its line in the parts list (bill of materials), which gives name, material, quantity and drawing or standard number. Operation sequence, weld inspection and lubrication are given elsewhere.
Which dimensions does an assembly drawing normally carry?
A. Only assembly and installation dimensions, such as overall size
Detail drawings fully define each part; the assembly drawing shows how parts fit and gives overall, mounting and critical assembly dimensions. Duplicating every detail dimension invites conflict.
In an exploded pictorial view in a spare-parts catalogue, how are the parts arranged?
C. Separated along their assembly axes, in the order in which they fit together
Exploded views move parts apart along the lines of assembly so that the order and relationship are clear; item numbers then refer to the parts list.
An implement frame drawing is plotted from a layout viewport set to 1:20. A beam that is 3.6 m long in the model will measure how long on paper?
B. 180 mm
3600 mm / 20 = 180 mm. 18 mm is a factor-of-ten slip; 72 mm divides by 50; 1800 mm divides by 2.
