What Agricultural and Biosystems Engineers Licensure Examination asks from it

Agricultural and Biosystems Engineers Licensure Examination (ABELE)

Design drawings of agricultural structures and machines within the structures and machinery subjects: reading plans, elevations and sections of farm buildings, scales and areas from plans, developments of sheet-metal parts such as hoppers and ducts, fasteners and welds on implements, and the drawing requirements that accompany design and test submissions under national agricultural engineering standards.

1 · Orthographic projection · easy

Which line type does ISO 128 assign to hidden edges and outlines?

  1. Continuous thick line
  2. Long-dash dotted thin line
  3. Continuous thin line
  4. Dashed thin line
Answer and working

D. Dashed thin line

Hidden outlines are dashed thin. Continuous thin is for dimension, extension and hatching lines; long-dash dotted thin is for centre lines and axes; continuous thick is for visible outlines.

2 · Orthographic projection · easy

What is the area of an A0 drawing sheet, and how does the next size A1 relate to it?

  1. 1 m²; A1 is one quarter of the area with sides half as long
  2. 2 m²; A1 is half the area with the same side ratio of 1:√2
  3. 1 m²; A1 is half the area with the same side ratio of 1:√2
  4. 0.5 m²; A1 is half the area with a side ratio of 1:2
Answer and working

C. 1 m²; A1 is half the area with the same side ratio of 1:√2

A0 is 841 × 1189 mm ≈ 1 m². Halving across the long side gives A1 (594 × 841), keeping the 1:√2 ratio. A quarter of the area with half-length sides is A2, two steps down. 2 m² is the 2A0 size.

3 · Orthographic projection · medium

The top view of a straight line AB measures 60 mm, and in the front view end B is 45 mm higher than end A. What are the true length of AB and its inclination θ to the HP?

  1. 75 mm and 53.13°
  2. 75 mm and 36.87°
  3. 105 mm and 36.87°
  4. 39.7 mm and 48.59°
Answer and working

B. 75 mm and 36.87°

The top view is TL cos θ and the height difference is TL sin θ, so TL = √(60² + 45²) = 75 mm and θ = sin⁻¹(45/75) = 36.87°. Adding the lengths (105) ignores the right angle; 53.13° is the complement, the angle with the vertical; subtracting squares gives 39.7 mm, a sign slip.

4 · Dimensioning and tolerances · medium

In the ISO system of limits and fits, what is special about a hole designated H?

  1. Its upper deviation is zero, so its largest size equals the nominal size
  2. It is always the tightest grade, IT01, for precision bearing housings
  3. It always produces an interference fit, whatever shaft is paired with it
  4. Its lower deviation is zero, so its smallest size equals the nominal size
Answer and working

D. Its lower deviation is zero, so its smallest size equals the nominal size

H holes have zero lower deviation; this is the basis of the hole-basis system. Zero upper deviation describes an h shaft. The letter fixes the position of the zone, not its width (the IT grade does that), and the fit depends on the shaft letter.

5 · Sectional views · easy

A symmetrical cast flange is to be shown with one half in section and the other half in outside view. What is this type of section called?

  1. Offset section
  2. Broken-out (local) section
  3. Revolved section
  4. Half section
Answer and working

D. Half section

A half section suits symmetrical parts: interior and exterior shown at once, divided by a centre line. An offset section steps the cutting plane; a revolved section is rotated in place; a broken-out section exposes a small local area within a freehand boundary.

6 · Isometric projection · medium

What is the difference between an isometric projection and an isometric drawing of the same object?

  1. Same shape; the drawing uses true lengths and is about 22% larger than the projection
  2. The drawing uses axes at 45°, while the projection uses axes at 30° to the horizontal
  3. Same size; the drawing usually differs only in showing circles as true circles
  4. The projection shows hidden lines, while the drawing never shows any lines behind
Answer and working

A. Same shape; the drawing uses true lengths and is about 22% larger than the projection

Both use the same axes; the projection reduces lengths by 0.816, while the drawing uses full lengths and is 1/0.816 = 1.225 times (about 22%) larger. Axes at 45° belong to oblique views; circles are ellipses in both.

7 · 2D and 3D CAD modelling · easy

Which file format represents a 3D model as a mesh of triangles, typically used for 3D printing?

  1. STEP
  2. IGES
  3. STL
  4. DXF
Answer and working

C. STL

STL approximates surfaces with triangles and is the common input to 3D printers. STEP and IGES carry exact geometry between CAD systems; DXF is a 2D drawing exchange format.

8 · Isometric projection · medium

An isometric drawing of a block 80 × 50 × 30 mm is started by drawing an enclosing box. What are the lengths drawn along the three isometric axes in an isometric drawing (not projection)?

  1. 80, 50 and 30 mm
  2. 98.0, 61.2 and 36.7 mm
  3. 65.3, 40.8 and 24.5 mm
  4. 80, 25 and 30 mm
Answer and working

A. 80, 50 and 30 mm

An isometric drawing uses true lengths on the axes. Multiplying by 0.816 gives the isometric projection; halving one length belongs to cabinet oblique; dividing by 0.816 enlarges it twice over. Dividing by 0.816 gives 98.0, 61.2 and 36.7 mm; multiplying gives 65.3, 40.8 and 24.5 mm; halving the depth gives 80, 25 and 30 mm.

9 · Building plans and elevations · medium

Under the common convention that names an elevation after the face of the building it shows, what does the 'north elevation' show?

  1. It shows the face of the building that faces north, viewed from the north
  2. It shows the south face, viewed by an observer standing to the north
  3. It is a plan view with the north point at the top of the sheet
  4. It is the elevation that receives most sun in the southern hemisphere
Answer and working

A. It shows the face of the building that faces north, viewed from the north

Elevations named by orientation describe the face shown: the north elevation is the north-facing face, seen from the north. Sun exposure depends on hemisphere and is not what the name means.

10 · 2D and 3D CAD modelling · hard

An implement frame drawing is plotted from a layout viewport set to 1:20. A beam that is 3.6 m long in the model will measure how long on paper?

  1. 72 mm
  2. 180 mm
  3. 1800 mm
  4. 18 mm
Answer and working

B. 180 mm

3600 mm / 20 = 180 mm. 18 mm is a factor-of-ten slip; 72 mm divides by 50; 1800 mm divides by 2.
