Choose an answer, then open the working. Each explanation says why the right answer is right and why the others are not.

1 · Hydraulic system: open and closed centre · medium

An operator holds a tractor's open-centre hydraulic lever against the stop after the cylinder has reached the end of its stroke. The gear pump delivers 30 L/min and the relief valve is set at 17.5 MPa. The rate of heat generation in the oil is

  1. 0.875 kW
  2. zero, because the cylinder is not moving
  3. 525 kW
  4. 8.75 kW
Answer and working

D. 8.75 kW

All the flow passes over the relief valve and does no work, so heat = Δp × Q = 17.5 MPa × 30 L/min/60 = 8.75 kW. /600 applies to bar, not MPa. This is why levers must not be held against the relief valve and why open-centre systems overheat when misused.

2 · Tyres and ballasting · easy

Each rear tyre of a tractor has an internal volume of 400 L. Both are filled to the usual 75% with a ballast solution of density 1.2 kg/L. The added mass is

  1. 360 kg
  2. 960 kg
  3. 720 kg
  4. 600 kg
Answer and working

C. 720 kg

Mass = 2 tyres × 400 L × 0.75 × 1.2 kg/L = 720 kg. 360 kg is one tyre; 960 kg assumes a full tyre, which leaves no air cushion; 600 kg assumes plain water.

3 · Gearbox and transmission: sliding, constant and synchromesh · easy

Gear clash when shifting a sliding-mesh gearbox on a moving tractor happens because

  1. the oil level is too high
  2. the synchroniser is working
  3. the PTO is engaged
  4. the gears to be meshed are turning at different speeds
Answer and working

D. the gears to be meshed are turning at different speeds

Teeth can mesh cleanly only when their pitch-line speeds match. Sliding-mesh boxes have no synchroniser, so they need the tractor stopped or double-declutching.

4 · Brakes · hard

A tractor pulls to the right under road braking with the pedals latched. The most probable cause is

  1. too much toe-in on the front wheels pulling the tractor to the right
  2. low PTO speed
  3. unequal brake adjustment or oil-contaminated linings on the left
  4. an engaged differential lock that drags the right-hand wheel
Answer and working

C. unequal brake adjustment or oil-contaminated linings on the left

If the right brake grips harder than the left, the tractor swings right. Unequal free travel or loss of friction on the left side (oil from a leaking seal) is the usual cause.

5 · Power tillers · easy

Steel cage wheels are fitted to a power tiller for

  1. road transport at speed
  2. dry-land ploughing on hard soil
  3. wet paddy fields
  4. reducing engine speed
Answer and working

C. wet paddy fields

Cage wheels sink into the mud and give traction where rubber tyres slip; they are removed for road work. They are used for puddling and other wet-field work.

6 · Operator controls and ROPS · easy

The most common way a tractor overturns backwards is when

  1. the front tyres are over-inflated, so the front end usually bounces up and the tractor tips back on field bumps
  2. the PTO speed is too low
  3. the rear wheels are held and axle torque rotates the tractor about them, or a load is hitched high
  4. the differential lock is released
Answer and working

C. the rear wheels are held and axle torque rotates the tractor about them, or a load is hitched high

When the wheels cannot turn, drive torque lifts the front; with a high hitch the pull adds to this moment. Rearward overturns happen in a second or two.
