What this subject covers

Soil as a living, finite resource: formation, physical, chemical and biological properties, organic matter, and how soil health is measured. The engineering properties of soil are in the Agricultural Engineering track; this subject is about soil function and its role in carbon, water and nutrient cycles.

In the exams: ICAR AIEEA-PG Physical Science Units III–IV (heavy); ICAR AICE subject 71 Unit 4 (soil pollution); GATE ES Section 2 (soil chemistry)

10 practice questions, worked

Choose an answer, then open the working. Each explanation says why the right answer is right and why the others are not.

1 · Soil formation factors and processes; soil profile · medium

Which process dominates soil formation in hot, humid tropics, leaving iron and aluminium oxides?

  1. Salinisation
  2. Laterisation
  3. Calcification
  4. Gleisation
Answer and working

B. Laterisation

Intense weathering and silica loss concentrate sesquioxides.

2 · Soil physical properties: texture, structure, bulk density, porosity · medium

Which structure type, with rounded tops, is typical of sodic subsoils?

  1. Granular
  2. Columnar
  3. Crumb
  4. Platy
Answer and working

B. Columnar

Prismatic peds with rounded caps are columnar, associated with high sodium.

3 · Soil colloids, clay minerals and cation exchange capacity · medium

Permanent negative charge on clay minerals arises from:

  1. Ammonia volatilisation
  2. Isomorphous substitution
  3. Liming the soil
  4. Organic matter decomposition
Answer and working

B. Isomorphous substitution

Replacement of Si4+ by Al3+ or Al3+ by Mg2+ during crystallisation leaves a charge deficit.

4 · Soil reaction: acid, saline, sodic and acid sulphate soils · medium

Why does the lime requirement of a clay soil exceed that of a sand at the same pH?

  1. Sands are always more acidic
  2. Lime does not dissolve in sandy soils, so it has no effect on their pH
  3. Clay soils contain no calcium at all
  4. The clay has higher buffer capacity from more exchangeable acidity
Answer and working

D. The clay has higher buffer capacity from more exchangeable acidity

More CEC and organic matter hold more reserve acidity.

5 · Essential plant nutrients and their forms in soil · medium

Who proposed the criteria of essentiality for plant nutrients?

  1. Darcy and Richards
  2. Arnon and Stout
  3. Jenny and Dokuchaev
  4. Liebig and Mitscherlich
Answer and working

B. Arnon and Stout

Arnon and Stout (1939). Liebig proposed the law of the minimum; Jenny and Dokuchaev worked on soil formation.

6 · Soil organic matter: decomposition, C:N ratio, humus, mineralisation · medium

In classical humus fractionation, which fraction is soluble in alkali but precipitated by acid?

  1. Humin
  2. Lignin
  3. Humic acid
  4. Fulvic acid
Answer and working

C. Humic acid

Fulvic acid is soluble in both; humin is insoluble.

7 · Soil biology: soil food web, earthworms, mycorrhizae · medium

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi mainly help plants acquire:

  1. Atmospheric oxygen
  2. Phosphorus and zinc
  3. Nitrogen gas
  4. Sodium and chloride
Answer and working

B. Phosphorus and zinc

Hyphae extend the depletion zone for immobile nutrients.

8 · Soil classification and soil survey; land capability classes · medium

Which order consists of organic soils such as peat?

  1. Aridisols
  2. Oxisols
  3. Histosols
  4. Entisols
Answer and working

C. Histosols

Histosols have thick organic horizons. Entisols, Aridisols and Oxisols are mineral soils.

9 · Soil health indicators and soil quality indices · medium

Who, with Parkin (1994), defined soil quality in a widely cited framework?

  1. Darcy
  2. Dalton
  3. Dokuchaev
  4. Doran
Answer and working

D. Doran

Doran and Parkin (1994); Karlen and colleagues (1997) refined the definition.

10 · Soil functions and soil ecosystem services · medium

In the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment framework, nutrient cycling and soil formation are which type of service?

  1. Regulating
  2. Cultural
  3. Provisioning
  4. Supporting
Answer and working

D. Supporting

Supporting services underpin the others. Provisioning, regulating and cultural services depend on them.
