Original practice questions written to the published syllabus · not past papersThe full EIA process as a practitioner runs it: screening, scoping, baseline studies, impact prediction, significance, mitigation hierarchy, environmental management plans, public consultation, review and follow-up, plus SEA and social impact assessment. The Agribusiness subject natural-resource-environmental-economics and the Agricultural Engineering waste subject each carry a one-unit introduction to EIA; this is the full subject.

Under India's EIA Notification 2006, which body appraises Category A projects?
A. The Expert Appraisal Committee for the central environment ministry
Category A projects are appraised at central level by Expert Appraisal Committees advising the MoEFCC; Category B projects go to SEIAA advised by SEAC. The SPCB conducts public hearings but does not appraise.

Which four stages make up the environmental clearance process under India's EIA Notification 2006?
B. Screening, scoping, public consultation and appraisal
The Notification sets screening (Category B only), scoping (ToR), public consultation and appraisal. The other sequences describe project phases, enforcement or an invented deemed-approval process.

For a large canal irrigation project, which issue would scoping most clearly identify as key?
B. Waterlogging and salinity in the command area and reduced flows downstream
Irrigation schemes typically raise water tables and salinity without drainage, and diversions reduce downstream flows for ecosystems and users; resettlement and vector-borne disease are other common issues. The other options are not typical of irrigation.

For comparing alternative routes of a pipeline through sensitive landscapes, which method is most suitable?
A. Weighted GIS overlay analysis
Overlay analysis in GIS maps habitats, slopes, settlements and heritage along each corridor and scores suitability, which suits spatial comparison of routes. Checklists and ad hoc panels lack spatial analysis.

Settlement and roadside businesses springing up along a new rural road are an example of what kind of impact?
C. Induced impact
Induced impacts arise from activities the project stimulates. Direct impacts are caused by the project itself (land take for the road); residual impacts remain after mitigation; transboundary impacts cross borders.

Why do mitigation measures often fail to be implemented?
D. They are described in the EIA but not carried into the EMP, clearance conditions and contracts
Measures need an owner, budget, schedule and indicator, and must appear in the EMP, conditions and contractor documents; otherwise they are forgotten. The other statements are false.

Baseline PM10 at a village is 72 µg/m³ against a standard of 100 µg/m³. Three proposed plants are each predicted to add 10 µg/m³ there. What is the cumulative concentration?
D. 102 µg/m³, which exceeds the standard
Cumulative = 72 + 3 × 10 = 102 µg/m³ > 100: each plant alone (82) appears acceptable but together they breach the standard. 30 ignores the baseline; 172 adds the standard.
