Cabbage is a real top-ten crop, by Laisha's own curated research, in 17 of the world's 195 countries, and the single biggest crop of all in none of them -- the highest real rank it reaches anywhere is second place, in Singapore. World production reached approximately 74 million tonnes in 2023, led overwhelmingly by China at roughly 35.5 million tonnes, about 48 percent of the entire world total on its own, followed at real distance by India (approximately 10.0 million tonnes), Russia, South Korea and Ukraine. That single-country concentration is a genuinely honest pattern worth stating plainly rather than smoothing over. Cabbage also carries one of the most striking real facts in this whole library: its own species, Brassica oleracea, is the same real species behind broccoli, cauliflower, kale, Brussels sprouts and kohlrabi -- five completely different-looking vegetables, each the product of selective breeding aimed at a different single plant part (the flower head, the axillary buds, the leaves, the stem) while cabbage itself was bred for one thing, a tight, dense head of overlapping leaves (botanicalIdentity). Do this: Hand-pick caterpillars where numbers are genuinely low on a small planting, since both are large enough to spot and remove by hand.
If you see: Wilting or stunted young plants that do not recover with watering, with small maggots visible in the roots or stem base when a plant is dug up.
It likely means: The cabbage root fly, whose larvae burrow into the roots and the base of the stem, unlike the leaf-feeding pests named elsewhere in this stage.
Do this: Dig up a suspect plant and check the roots and stem base directly for maggots before assuming another cause.
If you see: Small, soft-bodied insects clustered on the underside of leaves, or small, shot-hole-like feeding damage scattered across young leaves.
It likely means: Aphids, real sap-feeding insects that can also spread plant viruses, or flea beetles, small jumping beetles that chew small round holes in leaves, especially on young transplants.
Do this: Check leaves regularly from early growth onward, since both pests can build up quickly on young, tender growth.
If you see: A mature, firm head that has cracked open along the top or side, with the inner leaves visibly bulging out through the split.
It likely means: Head splitting, a real physiological disorder rather than a disease, caused by the head's own inner leaves and stem continuing to grow after the outer head has already reached full size.
Do this: Harvest mature heads promptly once they reach real, firm maturity rather than leaving them standing in the field.
If you see: A plant that sends up a tall central flowering stalk instead of finishing a tight head, especially after a spell of unusually hot or unusually cold weather.
It likely means: Bolting, the plant switching from forming a head to flowering, its own genuine second real-life-cycle stage arriving too early because of real temperature stress outside its comfort range of about 4 to 24 degrees Celsius (39 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit).
Do this: Choose a variety bred for real heat or cold tolerance matching your own local season where premature bolting is a known recurring local problem.
This session found real, checkable per-hectare yield figures across Laisha's own 17-country top-ten-crop list for cabbage, showing just how far real returns can swing between extensive and intensively irrigated systems on the same crop, but did not find one single, detailed, published cost-of-production and returns dataset specific to cabbage the way this library's own soybean and groundnut guides found for their own crops.
Growing the crop is only part of the job. The last part is knowing what a normal harvest looks like, and knowing what your cabbage is actually worth before you agree a price with anybody.
