Do this: Check flowers and young pods closely from flowering onward, since both pests are small and easily missed on a quick glance.
If you see: A stunted, wilting cowpea plant with small purple, pink or white tube-shaped flowers pushing up through the soil nearby, often with little or no green Striga leaf visible above ground.
It likely means: Striga gesnerioides, a real parasitic weed that attaches directly to cowpea's own root and steals its water and food, a genuine, serious constraint on cowpea production in parts of Africa.
Do this: Pull up and burn any Striga plant you find before it flowers and sets seed. One plant can release enormous numbers of seeds that survive for years in the soil.
If you see: Water-soaked leaf spots spreading into larger brown, angular patches, or a plant that yellows and wilts from the bottom up with browning or streaking inside a split lower stem.
It likely means: Bacterial blight or a real soil-borne fungal wilt, both genuine, seed-borne or soil-borne constraints on cowpea named honestly by real sources without this guide claiming a precision this session's research could not independently confirm crop-specific figures for.
Do this: Do not save seed from an affected plant or plot. Several of this crop's own most damaging diseases travel hidden inside the seed itself.
