It likely means: Ascochyta blight, actually a real complex of several closely related fungi -- Peyronellaea pinodes (the most aggressive), Didymella pinodella and Ascochyta pisi among them -- rather than one single pathogen.

Do this: Use certified, disease-free seed, since the pathogen can be seed-borne.

If you see: A white, powdery coating spreading across leaves, stems and pods, usually appearing later in the season, sometimes severe enough to visibly weaken the whole plant.

It likely means: Powdery mildew, caused by the fungus Erysiphe pisi -- a real, widespread disease of field pea whose economic importance genuinely varies by region and season.

Do this: Ask your seed supplier or extension service whether a variety carrying the er1 resistance gene is available locally, since resistant varieties are the most effective real control.

If you see: Clusters of small, soft-bodied green insects on leaves, stems and pods, often with sticky honeydew and sooty mould beneath them, and sometimes curled or distorted new growth.

It likely means: Pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum, a real, widespread sap-feeding pest that also carries and spreads several plant viruses between plants as it feeds.

Do this: Scout regularly, especially around flowering, rather than waiting for a visible heavy infestation.

If you see: A small, round exit hole in a stored or harvested dry pea seed, sometimes with a visible round window-like scar on the seed coat before the adult actually emerges.

It likely means: Pea weevil, Bruchus pisorum, a real, major seed pest that lays eggs on developing pods in the field, with larvae then developing inside the seed itself, unnoticed until well after harvest.

Do this: Buy and plant certified, weevil-free seed, since infestation genuinely travels with the seed itself, not just through field exposure.

If you see: A crop that has collapsed onto the ground before or during ripening, tangled and difficult to walk through, with pods lying against wet soil.

It likely means: Lodging, a real, common physical problem in this crop rather than a disease -- field pea's own natural climbing habit leaves it genuinely prone to collapsing under its own weight, especially in a dense, well-fed stand.
