It likely means: The Mexican bean beetle, Epilachna varivestis, a real, common pest of the whole pea-and-bean family whose larvae cause far more damage than its adults.
Do this: Hand-pick adult beetles and the bright yellow egg clusters found on the underside of leaves while numbers are still small.
If you see: Water-soaked spots on the underside of leaves that join into large irregular brown patches edged with a narrow yellow band, and on pods, sunken circular spots with a reddish-brown border, sometimes with a yellow slimy ooze in wet weather.
It likely means: Common bacterial blight, favoured by warm, humid weather, spread mainly through infected seed and by water splashed from plant to plant.
Do this: Do not save seed from this crop. Buy clean seed for next season.
If you see: Dark brown to black lines along the veins on the underside of leaves, and on pods, a sunken spot ringed by a raised black circle with a reddish border.
It likely means: Anthracnose, one of the most damaging bean diseases worldwide, favoured by cool, wet weather and carried into the field inside infected seed.
Do this: Do not save seed from an affected crop under any circumstances. The fungus gets inside the seed coat itself.
If you see: Small, raised, reddish-brown bumps scattered over leaves and sometimes on pods and stems. A rusty powder rubs off onto your finger when you wipe a spot.
It likely means: Bean rust, a fungus that needs many hours of standing leaf moisture to get started, so it follows dew, cloud and cool, damp weather.
Do this: Use the rub test to be sure. Rust powder comes off on your fingers; bacterial blight and leaf spot do not.
If you see: Leaves patterned in patchy light and dark green, puckered and curled, on plants that are noticeably shorter than their neighbours, flowering late and carrying fewer, smaller, sometimes misshapen pods.
It likely means: Bean common mosaic virus, carried into the crop inside infected seed and spread onward, plant to plant, by aphids.
Do this: Accept honestly that there is no cure and no spray for a virus.
If you see: White, cottony fungal growth on pods and stems, often starting where a pod touches the soil in a dense, shaded stand, following moist, cool weather. Cutting open an affected stem or pod reveals hard, black, irregular resting bodies.
It likely means: White mould, Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, a fungus with an exceptionally broad real host range across many plant families, favouring cool, moist, shaded conditions and a dense canopy.
Do this: Plant at a wider spacing and orient rows to let air move through the stand, especially for pole types.
If you see: Pods that bend rather than snap, with a visible ridge or bulge along their length where the seeds inside have swollen, and a fibrous, stringy texture when cut or bitten.
It likely means: The pod was left on the plant past its real picking window (Stage 9). This is not a pest or a disease. It is a real, avoidable timing loss.
Do this: Pick more often, ideally every two to three days, across the whole picking season.
If you see: The plant looks healthy and green and flowers normally, but flowers dry up and fall without setting a pod, worst in very hot weather or during a dry spell.
It likely means: The crop was stressed at exactly the wrong moment. This species aborts flowers under heat and water shortage, and flowering is this crop's own single most sensitive window (growthHabitAndMethod).
Do this: If you have any water at all, use it now, at the base of the plants rather than over the leaves.
This crop's own real economic case rests on a genuinely different real shape from common bean's own single-harvest economics: real income spread over several weeks of repeated picking, against a real, tighter cool-chain and labour cost this same repeated harvest demands.
