One pineapple planting gives a smallholder a real, valuable cash crop from land that many other fruit crops would refuse. If you see: Small, soft-bodied, waxy white insects clustered at the base of the leaves or on the roots, often with ants travelling up and down the plant, alongside reddening leaf tips and general wilting that does not clear up with watering.

It likely means: Mealybug wilt, carried by the pineapple mealybug, Dysmicoccus brevipes, a real, documented insect that feeds at the leaf bases and roots and is genuinely tended and protected by ants in exchange for the sweet substance it releases.

Do this: Control the ants tending the mealybugs, since removing their protection lets the mealybug's own natural predators and parasites do far more real work than a spray alone.

If you see: The central, youngest leaves at the very heart of the plant pull out easily with a gentle tug, often with a soft, rotten smell and a water-soaked, discoloured base.

It likely means: Heart rot, caused by real soil water moulds in the genus Phytophthora, most commonly Phytophthora cinnamomi, that thrive specifically in wet, poorly drained conditions.

Do this: Remove and destroy any plant confirmed with heart rot immediately, since there is no real cure once it has taken hold.

If you see: A plant that looks stunted, hungry and reddish however much you feed it, with roots that are soft, blackened and foul-smelling when you dig it up, sometimes toppling or pulling free of the ground easily.

It likely means: Root rot, caused by the same real family of soil water moulds behind heart rot, Phytophthora cinnamomi and the closely related Phytophthora nicotianae, again thriving in wet, poorly drained soil.

Do this: Dig up and check the roots of any stunted, reddish plant to confirm the real cause before assuming it is only a feeding problem.

If you see: Sudden collapse of the central leaves in warm, wet weather, often with a foul smell and visible soft rot, developing faster than the slower decline typical of fungal heart rot.

It likely means: Bacterial heart rot, caused by a real bacterium in the genus Dickeya, formerly classified in the genus Erwinia, which can also cause a related real fruit collapse.

Do this: Remove and destroy any plant showing sudden bacterial collapse, since there is no real cure once it has taken hold.

If you see: A harvested fruit carrying two or more separate leafy crowns instead of one, or several small side shoots, called slips, growing directly out of the fruit itself.

It likely means: A real, genuine growth variation rather than a disease, influenced by both variety and by real growing conditions including nutrition and forced-flowering timing.

Do this: Grade multiple-crowned fruit separately, since most fresh-market buyers pay less for it even though the flesh inside is genuinely unaffected.

If you see: A pale, bleached or scorched patch on the side of the fruit that faces the strongest sun, sometimes followed by a sunken, dried-out area.

It likely means: Sunscald, real direct sun damage to the fruit's own skin, more common on fruit exposed by wind-flattened or thin leaf cover, or in especially strong equatorial sun.

Do this: Where sunscald is a known local problem, cover exposed fruit loosely with dry leaves or paper once it is visible above the leaf canopy.

If you see: New leaves that turn pale yellow between the veins while the veins themselves stay green, most common on soil with a high, chalky pH.

It likely means: Iron deficiency, a real, well-documented nutrient shortage that becomes worse on alkaline soil regardless of how much iron is actually present in the ground, since high soil pH genuinely locks iron away from the plant's own roots.

Do this: Confirm it is genuinely iron shortage, not a disease, by checking that the pattern is an even, vein-and-blade contrast rather than blotchy or asymmetrical.

Real Farm Economics

Pineapple's real economics carry a genuinely shorter horizon than any tree crop in this library, worth stating plainly: about 18 to 24 months of real cost before a first harvest, followed by a genuinely faster second cycle if you keep a ratoon crop rather than starting over.

Yield & Market Value

Growing the crop is only part of the job.
