If you see: A white, powdery coating spreading across leaves, and sometimes stems or fruit, usually starting on older leaves lower in the canopy.

It likely means: Powdery mildew, a real, extremely common fungal disease of cucurbit crops worldwide, favoured by still air, dry leaf surfaces and humid conditions.

Do this: Improve airflow through wider spacing and avoiding overcrowding, since still air genuinely favours this disease.

If you see: Angular yellow patches on the leaf top, bounded by the leaf's own veins, with a grey-purple fuzzy growth on the underside in humid weather.

It likely means: Downy mildew, caused by a real, separate organism from powdery mildew, genuinely capable of spreading fast enough in cool, wet conditions to earn the real nickname 'wildfire'.

Do this: Improve drainage and airflow the same way as for powdery mildew, since both diseases favour excess leaf wetness.

If you see: Sudden wilting of a single stem or runner, with no preceding yellowing, spreading to the whole plant within days.

It likely means: Bacterial wilt, carried by the striped or spotted cucumber beetle while feeding, a real, incurable disease once a plant is infected.

Do this: Confirm the diagnosis with a real, simple field test: cut a stem near the base and pull the two halves apart slowly, watching for a sticky, milky thread of sap.

If you see: Sudden wilting of a single vine while the rest of the plant looks healthy, with sawdust-like frass near a small hole in the stem.

It likely means: Squash vine borer, a real, serious moth whose larvae tunnel hidden inside the main stem for weeks before wilting becomes obvious.

Do this: Wrap the base of young stems in foil or fine fabric, and use row covers until flowering, as real, practical prevention.

If you see: Leaves wilting, blackening and dying, with clusters of small, bronze, football-shaped eggs on the underside of leaves nearby.

Do this: Check the underside of leaves regularly for egg clusters, and crush any you find before they hatch.

If you see: A mottled pattern of light and dark green on leaves, with stunted, distorted new growth and sometimes bumpy, discoloured fruit.

It likely means: A mosaic virus, spread mainly by aphids feeding on the plant, a real, incurable viral disease once a plant is infected.

Do this: Understand that no spray treats the virus itself once a plant is infected. Only the aphid vector can be managed, and only before infection happens.

If you see: A fruit, even from an ordinarily sweet variety, that tastes noticeably bitter when a small raw piece is tasted.

It likely means: Elevated cucurbitacins, real bitter compounds this whole plant family makes naturally, most often raised by cross-pollination with a wild or ornamental gourd, or by real heat and drought stress on the plant.

Do this: Discard the whole fruit immediately. Cooking does not remove cucurbitacins, and this is a real, documented cause of genuine human illness.

If you see: Small fruit that yellow, shrivel and drop from the vine rather than swelling, despite the plant otherwise looking healthy and flowering normally.

It likely means: Poor pollination, most commonly a genuine shortage of visiting insects, or a missed hand-pollination window on that flower's own single receptive day (growthHabitAndMethod, Stage 7).

Do this: Confirm honestly whether real pollinators are genuinely visiting flowers during their one-day open window.
