1 · Agro-chemicals and the Insecticides Act (ABM 513) · easy

On pesticide labels in India, a red diamond-shaped toxicity mark indicates that the product is

  1. highly toxic
  2. extremely toxic
  3. slightly toxic
  4. moderately toxic
Answer and working

B. extremely toxic

India uses red for extremely toxic, yellow for highly toxic, blue for moderately toxic and green for slightly toxic. 'Highly toxic' is the yellow mark, a common confusion.

2 · Agro-chemicals and the Insecticides Act (ABM 513) · easy

Under India's Insecticides Act, 1968, which body registers pesticides for import, manufacture and sale?

  1. The Registration Committee constituted under the Act
  2. State agriculture departments under the Seeds Act
  3. The Bureau of Indian Standards under its own Act
  4. The food safety regulator under the food safety Act
Answer and working

A. The Registration Committee constituted under the Act

The Registration Committee registers insecticides; the Central Insecticides Board advises. States issue manufacturing and selling licences under the Insecticides Act, not the Seeds Act; the food safety regulator sets residue limits but does not register pesticides.

3 · Seed programmes and certification (ABM 514) · medium

A state sows 200,000 ha of a crop at a seed rate of 25 kg/ha and targets a seed replacement rate of 40%. How much quality seed must be supplied?

  1. 20,000 t
  2. 5,000 t
  3. 800 t
  4. 2,000 t
Answer and working

D. 2,000 t

Seed need = area x seed rate x SRR = 200,000 x 25 x 0.40 = 2,000,000 kg = 2,000 t. 5,000 t ignores the SRR (it is the whole seed requirement); 800 t applies the 40% twice; 20,000 t is a kg-to-tonne slip.

4 · Farm power and its cost analysis (ABM 517) · easy

Which of these is a variable (operating) cost of a tractor rather than a fixed cost?

  1. Depreciation
  2. Insurance and taxes
  3. Fuel and lubricants
  4. Interest on investment
Answer and working

C. Fuel and lubricants

Fuel and lubricants rise with hours used. Depreciation (straight-line), interest, housing, insurance and taxes are the fixed (DIHT) costs that occur whether or not the tractor works.

5 · Feed plant management and regulation (ABM 520) · easy

Which mycotoxin is of greatest concern in maize and groundnut meal stored under hot, humid conditions?

  1. Tannin
  2. Solanine
  3. Aflatoxin
  4. Gossypol
Answer and working

C. Aflatoxin

Aflatoxins are produced by Aspergillus moulds in warm, humid storage. Gossypol is a natural compound of cottonseed, solanine of potato, and tannins of sorghum and other plants; none is a mycotoxin.

6 · Poultry and hatchery business (ABM 522) · medium

A hatchery sets 12,000 eggs, 88% are fertile, and 9,500 saleable chicks hatch. What is hatchability on fertile eggs?

  1. 79.2%
  2. 88.0%
  3. 90.0%
  4. 10.0%
Answer and working

C. 90.0%

Fertile eggs = 12,000 x 0.88 = 10,560; hatchability on fertile = 9,500 / 10,560 = 90.0%. 79.2% is hatchability on total eggs set; 88.0% is fertility; 10.0% is the share of fertile eggs that failed to hatch.

7 · Poultry and hatchery business (ABM 522) · medium

A broiler flock of 10,000 chicks placed sells 9,600 birds at an average 2.4 kg and consumed 36,864 kg of feed. What is the flock FCR based on live weight sold?

  1. 1.54
  2. 0.625
  3. 3.84
  4. 1.60
Answer and working

D. 1.60

Live weight sold = 9,600 x 2.4 = 23,040 kg; FCR = 36,864 / 23,040 = 1.60. 1.54 uses chicks placed instead of birds sold; 0.625 inverts the ratio; 3.84 is feed per bird, not per kg.

8 · Poultry and hatchery business (ABM 522) · hard

A broiler flock has 96% livability, 2.0 kg average live weight at 32 days and FCR 1.5. Using EPEF = (livability % x live weight kg) / (age days x FCR) x 100, what is the flock's EPEF?

  1. 400
  2. 417
  3. 4.0
  4. 16.7
Answer and working

A. 400

EPEF = 96 x 2.0 / (32 x 1.5) x 100 = 192 / 48 x 100 = 400. 417 uses 100% livability; 16.7 uses the mortality (4%) instead of livability; 4.0 omits the x 100.

9 · Dairy plant management and dairy marketing (ABM 527) · medium

Under two-axis pricing a dairy pays 750 per kg of fat and 320 per kg of SNF. What is the price per kg of milk testing 4.0% fat and 8.6% SNF?

  1. 57.52
  2. 27.52
  3. 5,752
  4. 30.00
Answer and working

A. 57.52

Price per kg = (4.0 x 750 + 8.6 x 320)/100 = (3,000 + 2,752)/100 = 57.52. 30.00 is the fat payment only; 27.52 is the SNF payment only; 5,752 is the price per 100 kg read as per kg.

10 · Renewable energy institutions (ABM 529) · medium

A solar pump costs 375,000; a 60% subsidy leaves the farmer paying 150,000. It replaces 800 L of diesel a year at 90 per litre and saves 6,000 a year in engine maintenance. What is the farmer's simple payback?

  1. 4.81 years
  2. 0.52 years
  3. 2.08 years
  4. 1.92 years
Answer and working

D. 1.92 years

Annual saving = 800 x 90 + 6,000 = 78,000; payback = 150,000 / 78,000 = 1.92 years. 2.08 omits the maintenance saving; 4.81 uses the cost before subsidy; 0.52 inverts the ratio.
