6 practice questions, worked

Choose an answer, then open the working. Each explanation says why the right answer is right and why the others are not.

1 · MGNREGS · easy

Under MGNREGA, the employment guarantee applies to:

  1. 100 days per adult per calendar year
  2. 150 days per household in every district
  3. At least 100 days per rural household per financial year
  4. 100 days per job-card holder per season
Answer and working

C. At least 100 days per rural household per financial year

The unit is the household, and the period is the financial year. Extra days (for example 50 more in notified drought areas) are additional provisions, not the general rule.

2 · MGNREGS · medium

In a household, three adult members have each worked 30 days under MGNREGS this financial year in an area with no drought notification. How many more days can the household claim under the guarantee?

  1. 70
  2. 10
  3. 90
  4. 100
Answer and working

B. 10

The 100 days are per household, not per person: 3 x 30 = 90 used, so 100 - 90 = 10 remain. Answering 70 or 100 treats the entitlement as per worker.

3 · National Rural Livelihoods Mission · easy

The National Rural Livelihoods Mission (Aajeevika) was launched in 2011 by restructuring:

  1. MGNREGS
  2. IRDP
  3. JRY
  4. SGSY
Answer and working

D. SGSY

NRLM restructured SGSY in June 2011. IRDP had already been merged into SGSY in 1999.

4 · National Rural Livelihoods Mission · easy

  1. Savings, insurance, pension, credit and remittances
  2. Five members, five years, five loans, five trainings and five audits before federation
  3. Meetings, savings, lending, repayment and books
  4. Meeting, voting, auditing, electing office-bearers and reporting to the bank every month
Answer and working

C. Meetings, savings, lending, repayment and books

The five 'sutras' are the basic disciplines of a functioning SHG and the first things checked when grading a group for bank linkage. In full: regular meetings, regular savings, regular internal lending, timely repayment and up-to-date books of account.

5 · Local government and decentralised planning · easy

The 73rd Constitution Amendment Act came into force on:

  1. 2 October 1959
  2. 26 January 1950
  3. 1 June 1993
  4. 24 April 1993
Answer and working

D. 24 April 1993

24 April 1993 is observed as National Panchayati Raj Day. 2 October 1959 is the Nagaur inauguration; 1 June 1993 is the date for the 74th (urban) Amendment.

6 · Poverty alleviation strategies · easy

A village has 250 eligible PM-KISAN beneficiary families. What total amount reaches the village in one instalment?

  1. 1,500,000 currency units
  2. 1,000,000 currency units
  3. 500,000 currency units
  4. 125,000 currency units
Answer and working

C. 500,000 currency units

One instalment is 2,000 currency units per family: 250 x 2,000 = 500,000. 1,500,000 currency units is the annual total. 1,000,000 currency units counts two instalments, and 125,000 uses the monthly equivalent of 500.
