Choose an answer, then open the working. Each explanation says why the right answer is right and why the others are not.
A buffalo is found dead overnight with dark, unclotted blood oozing from the nostrils and anus. The owner asks for a post-mortem at the clinical complex. What is the correct first step?
A. Collect a peripheral blood smear and stain it for anthrax before any carcass is opened
Sudden death with bleeding from orifices and unclotted blood suggests anthrax. Opening the carcass lets the bacilli sporulate and contaminate the environment, so a smear from a peripheral vessel stained with polychrome methylene blue comes first, and the authority is informed if positive.
What must a discharge note for a treated lactating dairy cow contain that a discharge note for a pet dog does not?
D. The date and time after which milk and meat from the cow are fit for the food chain
Any medicine with a withdrawal period requires the note to state when milk and meat are safe again. Cost discussion belongs in every record, so it does not distinguish the cow.
In a downer cow that fails to rise after correct calcium therapy, which differential remains on the list?
D. Hip luxation, pelvic fracture or obturator nerve damage from a difficult calving
A cow that does not respond needs re-examination for calving injuries, hypophosphataemia, hypomagnesaemia, toxic mastitis and metritis. The other options invent effects of calcium that are not standard causes of persistent recumbency.
A frightened dog in the clinic snaps when approached. What should the student do before the full examination?
B. Ask the supervisor for safe restraint, a muzzle or sedation before continuing
Safety of the patient, owner and staff comes first; restraint or sedation is arranged by trained staff. Asking the owner to restrain exposes them to injury and liability, and prescribing without examination is not acceptable.
Which history items are essential for a repeat-breeder dairy cow?
A. Calving date, cycle regularity, insemination dates and method, and services per conception
Reproductive history needs dates of calving, oestrus and insemination, number of services, method of breeding and previous reproductive disease or hormone treatment.
A 450 kg cow is to receive a drug at 2.2 mg/kg. The product contains 50 mg/mL. What volume is injected?
D. 19.8 mL
450 × 2.2 = 990 mg; 990 ÷ 50 = 19.8 mL. 9.0 mL results from treating the weight as pounds and converting it wrongly; 198 mL is a decimal slip; 43.6 mL converts the weight to pounds (990 lb) before applying the per-kg dose. Doses in this question are for the arithmetic only — confirm against the product label and your national formulary.
Most vaccines carried to a rural camp must be kept within which temperature range unless the label states otherwise?
A. 2–8 °C
Most veterinary vaccines are stored at 2–8 °C; freezing or heat can inactivate them without visible change.
Which field test estimates the somatic cell count of each quarter of a cow's udder at the cow-side?
D. The California Mastitis Test
The CMT reagent reacts with DNA from somatic cells, giving a gel whose grade reflects cell count.
Which postings are part of the rotating internship under MSVE Regulation 19?
B. Their own college's VCC, another state's VCC, and further placements from a set list
Interns are posted to their own VCC, another state's VCC and placements such as zoos, abattoirs, milk plants, poultry farms, field hospitals, welfare organisations, vaccine institutes, the RVC, pharma and feed industries.
A VCC out-patient register shows 13,200 outdoor cases in 12 months. What is the average number of outdoor cases per month?
B. 1,100
13,200 ÷ 12 = 1,100 per month. 44 is the average per working day if there are 300 working days; 1,320 divides by 10.
