1 · Gearbox and transmission: sliding, constant and synchromesh · easy

In a two-stage reduction, a 15-tooth pinion on the input shaft drives a 45-tooth gear on the countershaft, and a 12-tooth pinion on the countershaft drives a 48-tooth gear on the output shaft. If the input turns at 1,800 rev/min, the output speed is

  1. 257 rev/min
  2. 600 rev/min
  3. 21,600 rev/min
  4. 150 rev/min
Answer and working

D. 150 rev/min

Ratio = (45/15) × (48/12) = 3 × 4 = 12. Output = 1,800/12 = 150 rev/min. Adding the ratios (3 + 4 = 7) gives 257; using only the first stage gives 600; multiplying instead of dividing gives 21,600.

2 · Clutch: single and dual plate · medium

A single-plate clutch has linings of outer radius 150 mm and inner radius 100 mm, μ = 0.3, and spring force 4000 N. Assuming uniform wear, the torque capacity is

  1. 304 N·m
  2. 150 N·m
  3. 300 N·m
  4. 360 N·m
Answer and working

C. 300 N·m

Uniform wear: R_m = (R_o + R_i)/2 = 0.125 m. T = μ W n R_m = 0.3 × 4000 × 2 × 0.125 = 300 N·m (n = 2 because the single driven plate has two friction faces). Uniform pressure gives R_m = 0.1267 m and 304 N·m; n = 1 gives 150 N·m; using the outer radius gives 360 N·m.

3 · Power take-off: standards and speeds · easy

A PTO dynamometer reads 250 N·m at 540 rev/min. The PTO power is

  1. 2.25 kW
  2. 26.18 kW
  3. 848 kW
  4. 14.14 kW
Answer and working

D. 14.14 kW

P = 2πNT/60,000 = 2π × 540 × 250/60,000 = 14.14 kW. Leaving out 2π gives 2.25; assuming a 1,000 rev/min shaft gives 26.18; not dividing rev/min by 60 gives a value sixty times too large.

4 · Power tillers · medium

A power tiller engine runs at 2200 rev/min; the overall reduction to the wheels is 60:1 and the pneumatic wheel diameter is 0.6 m. The theoretical forward speed is

  1. 4.15 km/h
  2. 8.29 km/h
  3. 1.15 km/h
  4. 69.1 km/h
Answer and working

A. 4.15 km/h

Wheel speed = 2200/60 = 36.67 rev/min. v = πDN = π × 0.6 × 36.67 = 69.1 m/min = 4.15 km/h. Treating 0.6 m as a radius doubles it; 1.15 is in m/s; 69.1 is m/min mislabelled.

5 · Tractor types and selection · medium

The main advantage of a track-type tractor over a wheeled tractor of similar mass on soft soil is

  1. higher road speed, since the track links act like a continuous set of gears
  2. lower ground pressure and higher tractive efficiency from a long contact patch
  3. lower purchase price
  4. tighter turning without skidding, because the tracks pivot on a central kingpin
Answer and working

B. lower ground pressure and higher tractive efficiency from a long contact patch

Tracks spread the load over a long, flat contact patch, lowering contact pressure and slip on soft soil. Tracks are slower on the road, cost more, and turn by skid steering, which disturbs soil.

6 · Tractor types and selection · easy

A row-crop tractor differs from a general utility tractor mainly in having

  1. a lower centre of gravity and a narrow fixed track for working under orchard trees
  2. high crop clearance and adjustable track width to straddle crop rows
  3. articulated steering and a single fixed track width
  4. no PTO
Answer and working

B. high crop clearance and adjustable track width to straddle crop rows

Row-crop tractors are built to work between and over crop rows: high clearance and adjustable wheel track. Low and narrow build is the orchard tractor.

7 · Gearbox and transmission: sliding, constant and synchromesh · medium

The synchroniser in a synchromesh gearbox

  1. locks the differential when the gear lever is moved to low range
  2. uses a cone clutch to match speeds before the dogs engage
  3. slides the spur gear sideways along its splines into mesh with the layshaft gear
  4. reverses the output direction by inserting an idler between the shafts
Answer and working

B. uses a cone clutch to match speeds before the dogs engage

The synchro ring rubs on the gear cone to bring both to the same speed, then the collar's dogs engage without clash, allowing shifts on the move.

8 · Power take-off: standards and speeds · medium

A 35 mm PTO shaft with 21 splines is designed to run at

  1. 1,000 rev/min
  2. 540 rev/min (type 1)
  3. 540 rev/min economy mode
  4. Proportional to ground speed
Answer and working

A. 1,000 rev/min

Type 1 is 35 mm with 6 splines at 540 rev/min; type 2 is 35 mm with 21 splines at 1,000 rev/min; type 3 is 45 mm with 20 splines at 1,000 rev/min. Different splines prevent mismatching.

9 · Steering geometry (Ackermann) and power steering · medium

In a hydrostatic power steering system, if the engine stops while moving

  1. steering usually locks solid
  2. steering becomes lighter
  3. it can still be steered, with more effort, because the metering unit acts as a hand pump
  4. the wheels return to the straight-ahead position automatically under the caster action of the kingpins
Answer and working

C. it can still be steered, with more effort, because the metering unit acts as a hand pump

The orbital metering unit contains a gerotor set that pumps oil to the cylinder when turned by hand, giving emergency steering without engine power.

10 · Steering geometry (Ackermann) and power steering · easy

The recirculating-ball steering gear uses balls

  1. as the main bearing of the front wheel
  2. to lock the differential
  3. running between a worm and a nut to reduce friction
  4. in the power-steering pump
Answer and working

C. running between a worm and a nut to reduce friction

Steel balls roll in the grooves between the worm and nut and recirculate through a return tube, giving low friction and wear.
