Choose an answer, then open the working. Each explanation says why the right answer is right and why the others are not.
A single-acting lift cylinder has a 90 mm bore and 120 mm stroke. The pump supplies 25 L/min to it. The time for a full lift is
A. 1.83 s
Swept volume = π/4 × 0.09² × 0.12 = 0.000763 m³ = 0.763 L. Time = 0.763/25 min = 0.0305 min = 1.83 s. Using the radius in πd²/4 gives a quarter; 0.03 is the answer in minutes read as seconds. In figures, a quarter is 0.46 s; 7.33 s uses πd² without the /4.
Each rear tyre of a tractor has an internal volume of 400 L. Both are filled to the usual 75% with a ballast solution of density 1.2 kg/L. The added mass is
C. 720 kg
Mass = 2 tyres × 400 L × 0.75 × 1.2 kg/L = 720 kg. 360 kg is one tyre; 960 kg assumes a full tyre, which leaves no air cushion; 600 kg assumes plain water.
A power tiller engine runs at 2200 rev/min; the overall reduction to the wheels is 60:1 and the pneumatic wheel diameter is 0.6 m. The theoretical forward speed is
A. 4.15 km/h
Wheel speed = 2200/60 = 36.67 rev/min. v = πDN = π × 0.6 × 36.67 = 69.1 m/min = 4.15 km/h. Treating 0.6 m as a radius doubles it; 1.15 is in m/s; 69.1 is m/min mislabelled.
In a dual (two-stage) clutch, pressing the pedal half way
A. stops drive to the transmission while the PTO keeps running
The first stage of pedal travel releases the transmission clutch; full travel also releases the PTO clutch. That is what makes the PTO 'live'.
Gear clash when shifting a sliding-mesh gearbox on a moving tractor happens because
D. the gears to be meshed are turning at different speeds
Teeth can mesh cleanly only when their pitch-line speeds match. Sliding-mesh boxes have no synchroniser, so they need the tractor stopped or double-declutching.
Steel cage wheels are fitted to a power tiller for
C. wet paddy fields
Cage wheels sink into the mud and give traction where rubber tyres slip; they are removed for road work. They are used for puddling and other wet-field work.
The most common way a tractor overturns backwards is when
C. the rear wheels are held and axle torque rotates the tractor about them, or a load is hitched high
When the wheels cannot turn, drive torque lifts the front; with a high hitch the pull adds to this moment. Rearward overturns happen in a second or two.
