In an arid irrigated plain, a shallow water table causes secondary salinisation mainly because:
D. Groundwater rises by capillarity to the surface, evaporates and leaves its salts behind
Capillary rise from a shallow water table followed by evaporation concentrates salt at the surface. Irrigation water adds salt too, but it is not always saline, and it is the shallow water table that stops that salt being leached.
A field has scattered isolated depressions on otherwise gently sloping land. Which surface drainage system is most suitable?
D. Random field drains connecting the depressions
Random drains connect only the low spots to an outlet, which is all that is needed. Parallel drains and bedding suit uniformly flat land; relief wells deal with artesian pressure.
When designing a collector ditch that receives subsurface lateral outlets, which hydraulic condition must be met at design flow?
C. The water level in the collector must be below the lateral outlets
If the collector water level submerges the outlets, the laterals back up and the water table between them rises. Critical flow and high velocities cause instability and erosion; a level bed gives no gradient.
What is the primary drainage purpose of land grading?
B. To give the field a uniform slope so that excess surface water runs off without ponding
Grading shapes the surface so water leaves the field; it does not affect the water table or subsoil properties. Seepage interception needs an interceptor drain.
Which is a function of a drain envelope?
A. Keeping soil out of the pipe
Envelopes have a filter function, a hydraulic function (lower entrance resistance) and a bedding function. They do not alter drainage-water chemistry or field-scale porosity. As a filter it retains soil particles so they do not enter and clog the pipe.
In a composite subsurface drainage system:
C. Laterals feed a buried collector
Composite systems use buried collectors, with manholes at junctions; singular systems let each lateral outlet into an open collector ditch.
Vertical drainage means:
D. Lowering the water table by pumping groundwater from wells
Vertical drainage uses tubewells to pump groundwater and lower the water table over a wide area. It needs a permeable aquifer connected to the topsoil.
The Salinity Control and Reclamation Projects (SCARPs), a large-scale programme of public drainage tubewells begun in the early 1960s, were implemented in:
B. Pakistan
SCARPs installed thousands of tubewells in the Indus plains of Pakistan. They lowered water tables but faced running-cost, maintenance and saline-disposal problems.
Bio-drainage lowers the water table by:
A. Transpiration of groundwater by trees or perennial plants with high water use
Plantations such as eucalyptus or poplar withdraw groundwater through transpiration. They exclude most salts rather than take them up, which is the method's weakness.
The osmotic effect of soil salinity on crops:
C. Lowers soil-water potential so plants take up water with more difficulty, as in drought
Dissolved salts lower the osmotic potential of soil water. Specific-ion toxicity (sodium, chloride, boron) is a separate effect, and sodicity (ESP) mainly affects soil structure.
This plan follows where our questions actually fall, so the time goes where the marks are likely to be. It is our reading of the syllabus, not the exam body's weighting.
Read the manual chapters for these first and do every worked question you can find on them.
Aim for one sitting per unit, then mixed questions across them.
Learn the definitions, classifications and standard numbers; these units are more often recalled than worked.
Do these early in revision so they are fast on the day.
