What this subject covers

Getting wood from stump to mill safely and with least damage: harvest planning, felling and extraction systems, forest roads, transport, ergonomics and reduced-impact logging. The Agricultural Engineering track (aquacultural-forest-engineering) introduces roads and logging machinery in a few units; this subject treats forest operations in full.

In the exams: IFoS Forestry Paper II Section A (surveying and forest engineering); ICAR AICE-JRF 59 Unit 7 (logging and ergonomics); PRC Forest Engineering and Utilization; Korea Forestry Engineer written subject Forest Road Engineering; ICAR AIEEA-PG Group 09 (forest engineering)

10 practice questions, worked

Choose an answer, then open the working. Each explanation says why the right answer is right and why the others are not.

1 · Chainsaw use and safety · medium

The chain brake on a chainsaw is activated by:

  1. Pulling the starter cord twice quickly
  2. Releasing the choke
  3. Opening the fuel cap
  4. The front hand guard or inertia
Answer and working

D. The front hand guard or inertia

It stops the chain within a fraction of a second.

2 · Extraction: skidding, forwarding, cable logging, animal and aerial extraction · medium

In a skyline system, logs are carried by:

  1. A carriage running on a cable
  2. A truck running on a parallel forest road
  3. A forwarder bunk
  4. An elephant harness
Answer and working

A. A carriage running on a cable

The skyline is stretched between tower and tailhold.

3 · Extraction: skidding, forwarding, cable logging, animal and aerial extraction · medium

A cable skidder brings logs to itself using:

  1. Chokers and a winch cable
  2. A hydraulic grapple only, with no cable
  3. A crane and bunk
  4. A conveyor belt
Answer and working

A. Chokers and a winch cable

Grapple skidders pick up bunches directly.

4 · Harvesting systems: cut-to-length and whole-tree · medium

A soil benefit of cut-to-length harvesting is that:

  1. All branches are removed from the site for burning
  2. No machines enter the stand
  3. Logs are dragged on bare soil
  4. Branches form brush mats on machine trails
Answer and working

D. Branches form brush mats on machine trails

Brush mats spread load and return nutrients.

5 · Harvesting systems: cut-to-length and whole-tree · hard

Whole-tree systems can supply energy markets because they:

  1. Residues pile up at the landing
  2. They leave all residues spread in the stand
  3. They burn residues at each stump
  4. They produce no residues at all
Answer and working

A. Residues pile up at the landing

Residue at landings is easy to chip.

6 · Road construction, drainage and maintenance · medium

An outsloped road surface sheds water:

  1. Towards the downhill side
  2. Towards an uphill ditch on the inside
  3. Towards the centre
  4. Into the nearest stream
Answer and working

A. Towards the downhill side

Insloped roads drain to an uphill ditch.

7 · Road construction, drainage and maintenance · hard

Full-bench road construction on steep slopes means:

  1. Placing all material as fill on the downhill side
  2. Building the road on piles over the slope
  3. Paving the surface with concrete slabs
  4. Cutting the full width into the slope
Answer and working

D. Cutting the full width into the slope

It avoids unstable sidecast fill.

8 · Log scaling, sorting and landing operations · medium

In India, round timber has traditionally been measured by:

  1. Mid-girth and length
  2. Weight on a weighbridge only
  3. Top diameter only
  4. Number of rings
Answer and working

A. Mid-girth and length

Volume by the quarter-girth (Hoppus) rule or true volume.

9 · Log scaling, sorting and landing operations · medium

Hammer marks on logs in Indian depots are used to:

  1. Measure the moisture content of logs
  2. Test for decay
  3. Treat logs
  4. Mark property and identify lots
Answer and working

D. Mark property and identify lots

They identify ownership and legality.

10 · Forest bridges and simple structures · easy

Culverts at stream crossings must be sized mainly for:

  1. The average dry-season flow
  2. The design flood and debris
  3. The width of the road only
  4. The colour of the water
Answer and working

B. The design flood and debris

Undersized culverts block and wash out.
