What this subject covers

Getting wood from stump to mill safely and with least damage: harvest planning, felling and extraction systems, forest roads, transport, ergonomics and reduced-impact logging. The Agricultural Engineering track (aquacultural-forest-engineering) introduces roads and logging machinery in a few units; this subject treats forest operations in full.

In the exams: IFoS Forestry Paper II Section A (surveying and forest engineering); ICAR AICE-JRF 59 Unit 7 (logging and ergonomics); PRC Forest Engineering and Utilization; Korea Forestry Engineer written subject Forest Road Engineering; ICAR AIEEA-PG Group 09 (forest engineering)

10 practice questions, worked

Choose an answer, then open the working. Each explanation says why the right answer is right and why the others are not.

1 · Harvest planning and layout · easy

An operational harvest plan is based mainly on:

  1. The timber price in last year's auctions alone
  2. Verbal instructions given to operators on the day
  3. The age of the forest officer in charge
  4. A pre-harvest inventory and a detailed map
Answer and working

D. A pre-harvest inventory and a detailed map

Maps show topography, streams, buffers and trees to fell and retain.

2 · Felling: manual, motor-manual and mechanised; directional felling · easy

In directional felling, the notch is cut on the side:

  1. Opposite the intended direction of fall
  2. Facing the nearest road whatever the lean
  3. Facing the intended direction of fall
  4. Facing uphill on every slope
Answer and working

C. Facing the intended direction of fall

The back cut is made from the opposite side.

3 · Chainsaw use and safety · medium

The chain brake on a chainsaw is activated by:

  1. Pulling the starter cord twice quickly
  2. Releasing the choke
  3. Opening the fuel cap
  4. The front hand guard or inertia
Answer and working

D. The front hand guard or inertia

It stops the chain within a fraction of a second.

4 · Harvesting systems: cut-to-length and whole-tree · medium

In the tree-length system, stems are:

  1. Cut into short logs at the stump by a harvester
  2. Extracted whole with all branches attached
  3. Left standing for later felling
  4. Delimbed at the stump, hauled full length
Answer and working

D. Delimbed at the stump, hauled full length

Cross-cutting is done at the landing or mill.

5 · Log scaling, sorting and landing operations · easy

Bucking means:

  1. Loading logs onto trucks at the landing
  2. Cross-cutting stems into logs
  3. Debarking logs
  4. Grading sawn boards
Answer and working

B. Cross-cutting stems into logs

Bucking decisions strongly affect log value.

6 · Log scaling, sorting and landing operations · medium

In India, round timber has traditionally been measured by:

  1. Mid-girth and length
  2. Weight on a weighbridge only
  3. Top diameter only
  4. Number of rings
Answer and working

A. Mid-girth and length

Volume by the quarter-girth (Hoppus) rule or true volume.

7 · Ergonomics and occupational safety in forest work · medium

FOPS on forest machines protects against:

  1. Engine overheating on long climbs
  2. Falling trees and branches
  3. Theft
  4. Tyre punctures
Answer and working

B. Falling trees and branches

Falling object protective structures.

8 · Reduced-impact logging and soil protection · easy

Reduced-impact logging aims to reduce:

  1. Timber volume harvested, reduced to zero
  2. Worker wages
  3. Damage to residual stand, soil and water
  4. Number of roads to none
Answer and working

C. Damage to residual stand, soil and water

Planned, controlled harvesting minimises impacts and waste.

9 · Reduced-impact logging and soil protection · medium

Compaction is greatest on:

  1. Dry, sandy soils in summer
  2. Frozen ground
  3. Wet, fine-textured soils
  4. Rock
Answer and working

C. Wet, fine-textured soils

Wet clays deform easily.

10 · Forest bridges and simple structures · medium

Temporary portable bridges on skid trails avoid:

  1. Felling trees beside the stream
  2. Measuring logs
  3. Paying contractors
  4. Fording streams with machines
Answer and working

D. Fording streams with machines

Fording damages beds and banks.
