What this subject covers

The earth as a system: its origin, rocks and minerals, weathering, landforms, plate processes, geochemical cycles and natural hazards. UGC NET gives it a whole unit; it underlies soil, water and hazard subjects.

In the exams: UGC NET Environmental Sciences Unit 4 (environmental geosciences); CSIR NET Earth Sciences; GATE ES Section 4 (aquifer formations)

What GATE asks from it

GATE ES (Section 4) and UPSC CSE

Aquifer formations and groundwater geology; for UPSC, plate tectonics and the Himalaya, earthquakes and seismic zones, tsunamis, cyclones, landslides, coastal regulation, mining conflicts and critical minerals.

10 practice questions, worked

Choose an answer, then open the working. Each explanation says why the right answer is right and why the others are not.

1 · Origin and evolution of the earth and its spheres · easy

The Great Oxidation Event, when oxygen began to accumulate in the atmosphere, occurred about:

  1. 240 million years ago
  2. 24,000 years ago
  3. 2.4 billion years ago
  4. 4.5 billion years ago
Answer and working

C. 2.4 billion years ago

Cyanobacterial photosynthesis eventually outpaced oxygen sinks such as reduced iron.

2 · Origin and evolution of the earth and its spheres · easy

The thin layer of the earth where life exists is the:

  1. Lithosphere
  2. Biosphere
  3. Asthenosphere
  4. Mesosphere
Answer and working

B. Biosphere

It spans parts of the other spheres. The lithosphere is the rigid outer shell; the asthenosphere and mesosphere are other layers.

3 · Earth's interior, plate tectonics and earthquakes · medium

The Himalaya formed mainly through:

  1. Hotspot volcanism like Hawaii
  2. A transform fault like the San Andreas
  3. Oceanic spreading at a mid-ocean ridge under the Indian Ocean
  4. Continent-continent collision of India with Eurasia
Answer and working

D. Continent-continent collision of India with Eurasia

Collision began about 50 million years ago. Mid-ocean spreading, transform faults and hotspots build other landforms.

4 · Minerals and rocks: igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic · easy

On Mohs' scale, which mineral has hardness 7?

  1. Talc
  2. Diamond
  3. Calcite
  4. Quartz
Answer and working

D. Quartz

Talc 1, calcite 3, diamond 10. Quartz scratches glass; topaz is 8.

5 · Weathering and soil formation from parent material · easy

Frost wedging is an example of:

  1. Metamorphism
  2. Physical weathering
  3. Biological fixation
  4. Chemical weathering
Answer and working

B. Physical weathering

Water expands on freezing, widening cracks. Chemical weathering changes mineral composition instead.

6 · Weathering and soil formation from parent material · medium

Karst landscapes form mainly by:

  1. Freezing and thawing of water in granite joints
  2. Oxidation of iron in basalt
  3. Dissolution of limestone by carbonic acid
  4. Wind abrasion of sand
Answer and working

C. Dissolution of limestone by carbonic acid

CaCO3 + H2O + CO2 -> Ca2+ + 2HCO3-. Freezing, wind abrasion and iron oxidation do not create karst.

7 · Weathering and soil formation from parent material · easy

Wind-deposited silt that forms thick soils in northern China and the US Midwest is called:

  1. Till
  2. Laterite
  3. Loess
  4. Colluvium
Answer and working

C. Loess

Till is glacial; colluvium is slope deposits. Laterite is a tropical weathering product.

8 · Geochemical cycles and the residence time concept · easy

The atmosphere holds about 13,000 km3 of water and precipitation is about 500,000 km3/yr. What is the residence time of atmospheric water?

  1. About 9 days
  2. About 9 years
  3. About 900 years
  4. About 9 hours
Answer and working

A. About 9 days

tau = 13,000/500,000 yr = 0.026 yr x 365 = 9.5 days.

9 · Groundwater geology and aquifer formations · medium

In hard-rock aquifers such as granite, water is stored mainly in:

  1. Gas bubbles
  2. The weathered zone and fractures
  3. Large caves
  4. Primary pores between interlocking crystals
Answer and working

B. The weathered zone and fractures

Yields are low and wells fail quickly when over-pumped.

10 · Coastal processes, sea-level change and coastal hazards · easy

A narrow ridge of sand extending from the shore into the sea is a:

  1. Moraine
  2. Spit
  3. Stack
  4. Cirque
Answer and working

B. Spit

Stacks are erosional; cirques and moraines are glacial.
