1 · Chemical bonding, concentration units, activity and ionic strength · medium

What is the ionic strength of a 0.01 M CaCl2 solution?

  1. 0.03 M
  2. 0.05 M
  3. 0.02 M
  4. 0.01 M
Answer and working

A. 0.03 M

I = ½(0.01 × 2² + 0.02 × 1²) = ½(0.04 + 0.02) = 0.03 M. 0.01 is the salt concentration; 0.02 ignores charge squared for Ca; 0.05 omits the ½.

2 · Acid-base equilibria, buffers and alkalinity · medium

An acetate buffer contains 0.2 M acetate and 0.1 M acetic acid (pKa 4.76). What is its pH?

  1. 4.46
  2. 5.06
  3. 4.76
  4. 5.76
Answer and working

B. 5.06

pH = pKa + log([A⁻]/[HA]) = 4.76 + log 2 = 5.06. 4.76 assumes equal amounts; 4.46 inverts the ratio; 5.76 adds one full unit.

3 · Solubility of gases in water: Henry's law · easy

How does the saturation concentration of dissolved oxygen in water change as temperature rises?

  1. It first rises then falls above 10 °C
  2. It increases
  3. It stays the same
  4. It decreases
Answer and working

D. It decreases

Gas solubility falls with temperature: about 14.6 mg/L at 0 °C, 9.1 at 20 °C and 7.6 at 30 °C.

4 · Complexation, precipitation and solubility product · medium

Why do amphoteric metal hydroxides such as Al(OH)3 redissolve at very high pH?

  1. They react with dissolved oxygen to form gases
  2. They lose all water and become oxides that dissolve
  3. They are reduced to the metal at high pH
  4. They form soluble hydroxo-anions such as aluminate
Answer and working

D. They form soluble hydroxo-anions such as aluminate

Amphoteric hydroxides dissolve in strong base as aluminate and similar anions, so each metal has a pH of minimum solubility.

5 · Redox reactions, pe-pH diagrams and redox zonation · medium

What is the oxidation state of sulphur in sulphate (SO4²⁻)?

  1. −2
  2. +6
  3. +2
  4. +4
Answer and working

B. +6

S + 4(−2) = −2, so S = +6. Sulphide is −2; sulphite +4.

6 · Water quality parameters and their measurement · easy

Which parameter measures the oxygen required to chemically oxidise organic matter using potassium dichromate?

  1. Chemical oxygen demand (COD)
  2. Total organic carbon (TOC)
  3. Dissolved oxygen (DO)
  4. Biochemical oxygen demand (BOD)
Answer and working

A. Chemical oxygen demand (COD)

COD uses dichromate in acid; BOD is microbial oxygen use over 5 days; DO is dissolved oxygen; TOC measures carbon.

7 · Composition and structure of the atmosphere · medium

Which radical is called the 'detergent of the atmosphere' because it initiates oxidation of most trace gases?

  1. The hydroxyl radical (OH)
  2. The nitrate radical (NO3)
  3. The superoxide ion (O2⁻)
  4. The chlorine atom (Cl)
Answer and working

A. The hydroxyl radical (OH)

OH, formed from ozone photolysis and water vapour, oxidises methane, CO, VOCs, SO2 and NO2.

8 · Stratospheric ozone chemistry and ozone-depleting substances · medium

Why does the Antarctic ozone hole form mainly in spring?

  1. Ozone is produced only in autumn over Antarctica
  2. Spring winds blow ozone towards the equator
  3. Volcanic eruptions occur mostly in spring
  4. Spring sun frees cloud-activated chlorine
Answer and working

D. Spring sun frees cloud-activated chlorine

Winter PSCs convert reservoirs to Cl2 and HOCl; spring sunlight releases Cl atoms that destroy ozone rapidly.

9 · Radioactivity and radionuclides in the environment · medium

Which type of radiation is stopped by a sheet of paper but is most hazardous when inhaled or ingested?

  1. Alpha particles
  2. X-rays
  3. Beta particles
  4. Gamma rays
Answer and working

A. Alpha particles

Alpha particles have low penetration but high ionisation; inside the body they damage tissue intensely.

10 · Radioactivity and radionuclides in the environment · medium

Which radionuclide from nuclear accidents concentrates in the thyroid gland?

  1. Caesium-137
  2. Strontium-90
  3. Radon-222
  4. Iodine-131
Answer and working

D. Iodine-131

I-131 (t½ ≈ 8 days) accumulates in the thyroid; Cs-137 behaves like potassium and Sr-90 like calcium.
