A farmer starts agitating a slurry pit under a fully slatted finisher house. Which gas is the main immediate danger to pigs and people?
C. Hydrogen sulphide, released in lethal concentrations during agitation
Hydrogen sulphide is held in slurry and released in bursts on agitation; at high concentration it paralyses the sense of smell and can kill within minutes. Ammonia is an irritant at chronic levels but not the acute agitation killer; methane is an explosion risk rather than the main toxic gas; slurry does not produce carbon monoxide.
Why are sows moved into the farrowing room about five to seven days before expected farrowing?
D. To settle and make colostral antibodies against that room's pathogens
Moving sows in early lets them settle and exposes them to the room's microflora so that their colostrum contains matching antibodies. Full lactation feeding before birth fattens sows; induction is with prostaglandin, not oxytocin, and is timed from gestation length.
When should cross-fostering of piglets ideally be done?
A. After piglets have had colostrum from their own dam, within 24 to 48 hours
Piglets should get their own mother's colostrum first and then be moved within 24 to 48 hours, before teat order is fixed. Fostering before suckling denies them their dam's colostrum; fostering at two weeks fails because teat order is settled and spreads disease; weaning is not fostering.
Which organism is the main cause of post-weaning diarrhoea in piglets?
B. Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli
Post-weaning diarrhoea is mainly enterotoxigenic E. coli (commonly F4 and F18 fimbriae). Clostridium perfringens type C causes necrotic enteritis in neonatal piglets; Lawsonia causes proliferative enteropathy in growers; Brachyspira hyodysenteriae causes swine dysentery in growers and finishers.
About how many days after foaling does the mare usually show her 'foal heat'?
C. About 5 to 12 days
The foal heat usually occurs about 5 to 12 days after foaling, and some breeders mate on it to keep a yearly foaling cycle. 21 to 30 days is roughly the next normal cycle; 60 and 180 days are well beyond it.
Which statement about the bitch's oestrous cycle is correct?
D. She is monoestrous and non-seasonal, cycling about every six to seven months
The bitch has one cycle per breeding period (monoestrous) at intervals of about six to seven months, without seasonality; the Basenji is an exception with one cycle a year. Polyoestrous seasonality and induced ovulation describe the queen; short-day breeding describes sheep and goats.
