1 · Farrowing management · easy

A sow is served on 10 January (non-leap year). Using a 114-day gestation, on which date is she expected to farrow?

  1. 3 June
  2. 4 May
  3. 24 May
  4. 14 April
Answer and working

B. 4 May

Days left in January after the 10th: 21; February 28 (49); March 31 (80); April 30 (110); four more days gives 4 May (114). 3 June (144 days) overshoots by a month, 24 May is 134 days, and 14 April is 94 days.

What is immunocastration in pigs?

  1. Banding the scrotum at birth to stop blood flow to the testes
  2. Injection of sow colostrum to suppress boar taint in young males
  3. Vaccination against Escherichia coli to protect the piglets from infection after castration
  4. A vaccine against gonadotrophin-releasing hormone that suppresses the testes
Answer and working

D. A vaccine against gonadotrophin-releasing hormone that suppresses the testes

Immunocastration uses two injections of a GnRH vaccine; the antibodies block the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis and reduce androstenone and skatole. It is not an E. coli vaccine, does not use colostrum, and banding is a physical method used in calves and lambs, not pigs.

Where is the P2 backfat measurement taken on a pig?

  1. At the shoulder over the third thoracic vertebra
  2. 65 mm from the midline over the last rib
  3. At the midline over the first lumbar vertebra
  4. On the ham, 20 mm lateral to the tail head
Answer and working

B. 65 mm from the midline over the last rib

P2 is measured 65 mm from the dorsal midline at the head of the last rib, and is the standard site for live ultrasound and carcass probe grading in many countries. Midline, shoulder and ham sites are other fat measurement points, not P2.

What is the offspring of a male donkey (jack) and a female horse (mare) called?

  1. Hinny
  2. Jennet
  3. Mule
  4. Zebroid
Answer and working

C. Mule

Jack x mare gives a mule; stallion x jenny gives a hinny. A zebroid is a zebra hybrid; a jennet (jenny) is a female donkey.

5 · Equine management · hard

A mare is covered and conceives on 1 April. Using a 340-day gestation, when is the foal expected (the following February has 28 days)?

  1. 1 March
  2. 7 March
  3. 7 February
  4. 11 March
Answer and working

B. 7 March

1 April + 340 days: April 29, May 31 (60), June 30 (90), July 31 (121), August 31 (152), September 30 (182), October 31 (213), November 30 (243), December 31 (274), January 31 (305), February 28 (333), plus 7 = 7 March. 1 March assumes 11 calendar months exactly; 11 March counts 30-day months (11 × 30 + 10); 7 February is a month short.

6 · Rabbit management · easy

About when should a nest box be placed in a pregnant doe's cage?

  1. About day 10 of gestation
  2. On the day after kindling
  3. About day 27 or 28 of gestation
  4. On the day of mating
Answer and working

C. About day 27 or 28 of gestation

The nest box goes in about day 27 or 28, a few days before the 31-day term. Too early and the doe soils it; after kindling is too late, as kits may be born on the wire and die of cold.

7 · Laboratory animal management · medium

Grouped female mice without a male are exposed to male bedding, and many come into oestrus on the third night. What is this called?

  1. The Vandenbergh effect
  2. The Lee-Boot effect
  3. The Bruce effect
  4. The Whitten effect
Answer and working

D. The Whitten effect

The Whitten effect is the synchronisation of oestrus in grouped females by male odour. The Bruce effect is pregnancy block by a strange male; the Lee-Boot effect is suppression of cycles in all-female groups; the Vandenbergh effect is earlier puberty in young females.

What do the 3Rs of humane animal research stand for?

  1. Registration, Review, Reporting
  2. Rearing, Rehoming, Retirement
  3. Replacement, Reduction, Refinement
  4. Restraint, Recovery, Release
Answer and working

C. Replacement, Reduction, Refinement

Russell and Burch (1959) defined the 3Rs as Replacement (avoiding animals), Reduction (fewest animals for valid results) and Refinement (minimising pain and distress). The other triplets are not the 3Rs.

9 · Dog and cat management · easy

A bitch ovulates on 10 March. Using a gestation of 63 days from ovulation, when is whelping expected?

  1. 10 April
  2. 28 April
  3. 12 May
  4. 26 May
Answer and working

C. 12 May

From 10 March: 21 days to 31 March, 30 days in April (51), then 12 more days gives 12 May (63). 10 April is only 31 days; 28 April is 49 days; 26 May is 77 days.

In India, the sterilisation and vaccination of community dogs, which are then returned to the same area, are governed by which rules?

  1. The Animal Birth Control Rules, 2023
  2. The Prevention of Cruelty (Slaughter House) Rules, 2001
  3. The Dog Breeding and Marketing Rules for pet shops
  4. The Breeding of and Experiments on Animals Rules, 1998
Answer and working

A. The Animal Birth Control Rules, 2023

The Animal Birth Control Rules, 2023, made under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, govern capture, sterilisation, anti-rabies vaccination and release of community dogs to their area. The slaughter house and experimentation rules cover other subjects; dog breeding and pet shop rules regulate commercial breeders and shops.
