How many serotypes of foot-and-mouth disease virus are recognised?
C. Seven: O, A, C, Asia 1, SAT 1, SAT 2 and SAT 3
There are seven immunologically distinct serotypes (O, A, C, Asia 1, SAT 1-3), and immunity to one does not protect against another. Nine serotypes is African horse sickness, and the 'one serotype' idea fits PPR, not FMD.
In an FMD epidemic, which species is described as the 'amplifier' host and why?
A. Pigs: they exhale far more airborne virus
Pigs excrete very large quantities of virus in aerosol and so amplify spread. Cattle are the indicator hosts (most susceptible to inhaled virus, clear signs); sheep are maintenance hosts with mild signs; buffalo are long-term carriers, which is a different role.
A 3-week-old calf on a farm with an FMD outbreak dies suddenly without vesicles. What lesion would you expect at necropsy?
B. Grey-white 'tiger heart' streaks in the myocardium
Young animals die of FMD myocarditis, seen as pale streaks in the heart muscle. Button ulcers are classical swine fever, haemorrhage at the pulmonary artery base is bluetongue, and zebra stripes are typical of PPR and rinderpest.
In pigs, vesicles on the snout and feet cannot be attributed to FMD on clinical grounds. Which disease produces identical lesions?
D. Swine vesicular disease
Swine vesicular disease, vesicular stomatitis, vesicular exanthema and Senecavirus A all cause vesicles indistinguishable from FMD, so every vesicular disease in pigs is reported. Erysipelas causes raised diamond-shaped skin lesions, not vesicles.
A flock of goats bought at a market develops fever, matted eyelids, foul-smelling erosions on the gums, profuse diarrhoea and coughing; several die. Which disease is most likely?
D. Peste des petits ruminants
Fever, oculonasal discharge, erosive stomatitis, diarrhoea and pneumonia together form the stomatitis-pneumoenteritis syndrome of PPR. CCPP causes pneumonia without the oral erosions and diarrhoea; orf causes proliferative scabs on the lips, not necrotic stomatitis with diarrhoea.
Bluetongue virus is transmitted mainly by which vector?
A. Biting midges of the genus Culicoides
Bluetongue is an orbivirus spread by Culicoides midges, which is why it is seasonal. Hyalomma transmits Theileria annulata, Glossina transmits African trypanosomes, and Phlebotomus transmits Leishmania.
Which sample and test are most appropriate to detect current bluetongue infection in a febrile ewe?
B. Whole blood in EDTA for RT-PCR
RT-PCR on EDTA blood detects viral RNA in the viraemic animal. A single cELISA shows exposure, not current infection, and may be negative early. Faecal sedimentation and skin scrapings are parasitological tests.
The 'blue eye' seen in some dogs recovering from infectious canine hepatitis is caused by:
D. Immune-complex anterior uveitis leading to corneal oedema
Blue eye is an immune-complex (type III hypersensitivity) anterior uveitis with corneal oedema caused by CAdV-1. Using CAdV-2 in vaccines avoids this reaction while still protecting against CAdV-1.
Which property of feline panleukopenia virus most affects how a cattery is cleaned after an outbreak?
B. It is non-enveloped and survives for months, so ordinary detergents are not enough
Parvoviruses are non-enveloped and very resistant; they survive for months to a year in the environment, so cleaning must be followed by a disinfectant active against non-enveloped viruses, such as hypochlorite or a peroxygen product.
Which tick genus transmits Theileria annulata, the cause of tropical theileriosis?
D. Hyalomma
T. annulata is transmitted by Hyalomma ticks. Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus transmits Babesia bigemina and B. bovis; Ixodes ricinus transmits B. divergens in Europe; Ornithodoros soft ticks transmit ASF virus.
