How to Grow Mango

Mango feeds real households and real incomes across a genuinely wide tropical and subtropical belt, from South Asia to West Africa to Central America and the Pacific. It is the national fruit of India, Pakistan and the Philippines, and the national tree of Bangladesh. World production of mangoes, mangosteens and guavas together reached approximately 61.1 million tonnes in 2023, with India alone growing about 43 percent of that combined total (globalImportance). Unlike many of the annual crops in this library, mango is a genuine multi-decade tree crop: a single well-managed tree can bear fruit for 40 years or more, giving a family real income long after the cost of planting it is forgotten. Laisha's own curated crop-priority research finds mango among the top ten crops grown in 24 of the world's 195 countries, spanning the Caribbean, South Asia, the Middle East, West Africa and the Pacific -- and, tellingly, India itself, despite being the world's single largest mango producer by a wide margin, is not on that list, because rice, wheat and sugarcane dominate India's own top ten even more (globalImportance). Global Importance

Mango is grown overwhelmingly across the tropical and warm subtropical belt, and one country alone -- India -- grows well under half the world's combined mango, mangosteen and guava supply, almost entirely for its own vast domestic market rather than for export. This guide states honestly, up front, that the world figures it quotes below describe a combined FAOSTAT category, not mango alone.

Growth Habit

Three real, foundational facts decide almost everything else a mango grower does: it is a genuine long-lived woody tree, not an annual or a short-lived perennial; almost every named commercial variety is a grafted clone rather than a seed-grown individual, for the real genetic reason explained in botanicalIdentity; and a mango tree genuinely needs a real dry season to flower well, the opposite climate signal from many of the crops in this library.

Growing Mango, Stage by Stage

  1. 1. Choose land, climate and site — Confirm your own real climate genuinely gives this crop a dry season around flowering time, and choose land with real drainage, because both decisions are far harder to correct once a tree is years into the ground.
  2. 2. Choose your planting material -- a genuine grafted sapling — Buy only a genuine grafted sapling of a known, named variety from a real, checkable nursery -- because, as this guide's own botanicalIdentity explains, a seed of unknown parentage will not reliably grow into the variety you actually wanted.
  3. 3. Plant the sapling — Plant at the right depth, at the start of a reliable wet season, and protect the young tree through its first fragile months.
  4. 4. The juvenile years -- formative pruning and a tree that gives you nothing yet — Use the genuinely real wait before first bearing productively: shape the young tree's branches while they are still small, and consider a real intercrop for real income while it establishes.
  5. 5. Water — A young tree needs real, regular water to establish. A mature tree tolerates real dry spells and, distinctively for this crop, actively wants dryness around flowering time (growthHabitAndMethod).
  6. 6. Weed the base and feed the tree — Keep the ground under the canopy clear of weeds, and feed a mango tree per tree, not per hectare, increasing the dose gradually as the tree ages, following a real, published schedule rather than guessing.
  7. 7. Flowering and fruit set — Recognise the real flowering window that follows a genuine dry spell, understand honestly how the flowers actually set fruit, and expect only a small share of the huge flower cluster to become a real fruit.
  8. 8. Manage the bearing tree -- pruning and canopy care — Prune after each harvest, not before flowering, to keep the canopy open, manageable and productive for decades rather than letting it grow into an unmanageable forest tree.
  9. 9. Stop the pests and diseases getting in — A handful of real pests and diseases matter more than everything else in this crop. Most are far easier to keep out or catch early than to clear once established.
  10. 10. Know when to harvest — Mango is usually cut while still firm and not fully ripe, and the judgement is made by looking at the fruit's own shoulders and by counting real days from flowering, not by squeezing it soft.

  12. 12. Ripen, store and sell it — A cut mango keeps ripening after harvest, which is a real advantage if you understand it and a real danger if you force it with the wrong method.

Fertiliser Programme

Mango is fed per tree, not per hectare, and the dose is meant to grow with the tree -- a small amount for a young, non-bearing tree, rising every year until a mature tree reaches its own real, settled adult ration.

Common Problems & Troubleshooting

If you see: Dark, sunken spots on leaves, flowers and fruit, sometimes merging into larger blackened patches, worst in humid weather, and appearing on fruit even after it looked sound at harvest.

It likely means: Anthracnose, caused by the fungus Colletotrichum gloeosporioides -- this crop's own single most common and economically damaging disease worldwide in humid climates.

Do this: Prune to open the canopy and let air and light through, since a dense, humid canopy is exactly where this disease thrives (Stage 8).

If you see: A white, powdery coating spreading across young leaves, flower clusters and small developing fruit, most active in cool, humid weather during flowering.

It likely means: Powdery mildew, caused by the fungus Oidium mangiferae -- one of the most serious diseases of this crop specifically because it attacks the flowers directly, not just the leaves.

Do this: Prune for an open canopy that dries quickly after dew or rain, the same real cultural control this guide's own Stage 8 already teaches.

If you see: Flower clusters that come out short, tight and bunched instead of long and open, or vegetative shoots that grow into a dense, distorted rosette instead of normal new growth.

It likely means: Mango malformation, historically attributed to the fungus once called Fusarium moniliforme and now understood as a real complex most closely associated with Fusarium mangiferae, together with a tiny mite that helps it spread between buds.

Do this: Cut out and burn affected flower clusters and shoots as soon as you see them, since removal and destruction is the only real remedy this disease currently has.

If you see: Small, angular, water-soaked spots on leaves that turn black, and star-shaped cracks on fruit skin, sometimes oozing.

It likely means: Bacterial black spot, caused by the bacterium Xanthomonas citri pv. mangiferaeindicae, a real, documented disease of this crop distinct from the fungal diseases above.

Do this: Prune out and destroy visibly infected shoots and leaves, and avoid working in a wet canopy, since moving through wet foliage spreads bacteria between branches and trees.

If you see: Small, jumping insects clustered on new shoots and flower clusters, a sticky honeydew coating on leaves beneath them, and sometimes a black sooty mould growing on that honeydew.

It likely means: Mango hoppers, in the genus Idioscopus, and related sap-feeding insects including mango mealybug -- among the most damaging insect pests of this crop's own flowers and young shoots.

Do this: Scout flower clusters regularly through flowering, since this is when hopper damage costs the most real fruit set.

If you see: A small puncture or discoloured spot on the fruit's skin, sometimes with a soft, watery patch beneath it, and maggots found inside the flesh when the fruit is cut open, often only once it has started ripening.

It likely means: Fruit fly, most seriously the oriental fruit fly Bactrocera dorsalis and related Bactrocera species across most of the world's mango-growing regions -- described in published horticultural literature as this crop's greatest single enemy in several producing regions.

Do this: Collect and destroy fallen and infested fruit daily through the fruiting season, rather than leaving it under the tree, since fallen fruit is where the next generation develops.

If you see: No visible sign on the outside of the fruit at all -- the first real sign is a small tunnel and a compact, dark weevil found inside the seed itself when a fruit is cut open, well after harvest.

It likely means: Mango seed weevil, Sternochetus mangiferae, a real, major quarantine pest whose larvae develop hidden entirely inside the seed, undetectable from outside the fruit.

Do this: Collect and destroy fallen fruit and discarded seeds regularly, since the weevil completes its life cycle inside a seed left lying on the ground.

If you see: A tree, or a whole orchard, that carries a huge crop one year and then flowers weakly or barely at all the following year, on a genuine, repeating cycle.

It likely means: Alternate, or biennial, bearing -- a real, natural physiological rhythm in many mango varieties rather than a disease, a pest or a management mistake on its own (growthHabitAndMethod).

Do this: In a heavy year, remove a share of the smallest, most crowded young fruit early, so the tree carries a genuinely more moderate load rather than its own full natural excess (Stage 8).

Real Farm Economics

Mango's real economics carry a genuine long horizon worth stating plainly: several years of real cost before a single fruit is sold, followed by decades of real, ongoing income once bearing begins, and a natural year-to-year swing in yield that a smallholder budget should plan around rather than be surprised by.

Yield & Market Value

Growing the crop is only part of the job. The last part is knowing what a normal harvest looks like, and knowing what your mango is actually worth before you agree a price with anybody -- and for this specific crop, this guide states a real, honest gap plainly: mango is not one of the crops Laisha's own live Global Commodity Price service currently tracks.
