10 practice questions, worked

Choose an answer, then open the working. Each explanation says why the right answer is right and why the others are not.

1 · Job analysis, job description and job specification · easy

The two main written products of job analysis are:

  1. Job evaluation and merit rating
  2. Job description and job specification
  3. Job enlargement and job enrichment
  4. Appointment letter and induction manual
Answer and working

B. Job description and job specification

Job analysis yields a job description (duties, conditions) and a job specification (human qualifications). Job evaluation uses these outputs to price jobs.

2 · Recruitment and selection, including e-recruitment · medium

Which selection method has the weakest record of predicting job performance in meta-analytic research?

  1. Structured interviews (behavioural)
  2. Work-sample tests
  3. General mental ability tests
  4. Graphology (handwriting analysis)
Answer and working

D. Graphology (handwriting analysis)

Schmidt and Hunter's meta-analyses place general mental ability, work samples and structured interviews among the most valid predictors; graphology has near-zero validity.

3 · Induction and training · easy

Training employees on replicated equipment set up in a separate area away from the production floor is called:

  1. Apprenticeship training
  2. Sensitivity training
  3. Vestibule training
  4. Understudy training
Answer and working

C. Vestibule training

Vestibule training simulates the workplace off the line so errors do not disrupt production. Apprenticeship combines work and instruction on the job; sensitivity training is T-group work on self-awareness.

4 · Performance appraisal · medium

In the forced-choice method of appraisal, the rater:

  1. Must place fixed percentages of staff in each rating category, for example 10% top and 10% bottom
  2. Picks from statements that look equally favourable but differ in how well they discriminate performance
  3. Records specific examples of effective and ineffective behaviour observed during the whole review period
  4. Compares each employee with every other employee
Answer and working

B. Picks from statements that look equally favourable but differ in how well they discriminate performance

Forced choice reduces deliberate bias by hiding which statement scores. Fixed percentages are forced distribution; examples are critical incidents; comparing all pairs is paired comparison.

5 · Compensation, job evaluation and incentives · easy

An employee earns 45,000 a month in a grade whose range midpoint is 50,000. What is the compa-ratio?

  1. 0.9
  2. 1.11
  3. 0.10
  4. 90
Answer and working

A. 0.9

Compa-ratio = pay / midpoint = 45,000/50,000 = 0.90 (often written as 90%). 1.11 inverts the ratio; 0.10 is the shortfall as a fraction of the midpoint.

6 · Compensation, job evaluation and incentives · medium

A harvest worker picks 60 kg at a piece rate of 4 per kg. The applicable minimum daily wage is 300, and the law requires piece-rate earnings to be topped up to the minimum for time worked. What must the worker be paid for the day?

  1. 240
  2. 540
  3. 300
  4. 60
Answer and working

C. 300

Piece earnings = 60 × 4 = 240, below the minimum of 300, so the employer tops up by 60 to pay 300. Paying 240 breaches the rule; 540 adds the minimum to piece earnings; 60 is only the top-up. Whether and how top-up applies varies by country.

7 · Compensation, job evaluation and incentives · easy

Which theorist described Theory X and Theory Y?

  1. William Ouchi
  2. Abraham Maslow
  3. Douglas McGregor
  4. Victor Vroom
Answer and working

C. Douglas McGregor

McGregor contrasted Theory X (people dislike work and need control) with Theory Y (people can be self-directed). Ouchi proposed Theory Z.

8 · Trade unions and collective bargaining · medium

Selig Perlman's theory of the labour movement holds that workers' unions are primarily:

  1. Instruments of class revolution
  2. Job-conscious, seeking control over scarce job opportunities
  3. Agents of employers' welfare policy
  4. Political parties in disguise
Answer and working

B. Job-conscious, seeking control over scarce job opportunities

Perlman's A Theory of the Labor Movement (1928) saw unions as job-conscious. The class-revolution view is Marxist.

9 · Worker participation in management · easy

Small groups of employees who meet voluntarily and regularly to identify and solve work-related problems are called:

  1. Statutory works councils
  2. Joint management councils
  3. Board-level worker directors
  4. Quality circles
Answer and working

D. Quality circles

Quality circles are voluntary problem-solving groups, spread widely from Japan. Works councils and JMCs are representative bodies; worker directors sit on boards.

10 · Grievance handling · easy

McGregor's 'hot-stove rule' says discipline should be:

  1. Delayed until the annual appraisal
  2. Applied more strictly to new employees
  3. Kept secret from the employee
  4. Immediate, with warning, consistent and impersonal
Answer and working

D. Immediate, with warning, consistent and impersonal

Like touching a hot stove: the burn is immediate, you were warned, it happens every time, and to anyone.
