Choose an answer, then open the working. Each explanation says why the right answer is right and why the others are not.

1 · Objectives and principles of forest management · medium

A felling series is:

  1. The order in which tree species are cut within a single compartment each year
  2. The list of saw-milling contractors approved for each forest division
  3. A part of a working circle with its own yield and sequence of fellings
  4. The series of thinnings applied to one stand over a whole rotation
Answer and working

C. A part of a working circle with its own yield and sequence of fellings

Felling series spread work and sustain the yield within each part of a working circle. The sequence of thinnings in a stand is a thinning schedule.

2 · Sustained yield and the normal forest · easy

Sustained yield management aims to:

  1. Supply a continuous flow of produce without impairing future yields
  2. Harvest as much timber as possible in the first rotation and then let the forest recover
  3. Keep the growing stock constant by banning all fellings in the forest permanently
  4. Sell standing timber only when market prices are at their highest point
Answer and working

A. Supply a continuous flow of produce without impairing future yields

Sustained yield means a continuous, ideally even, yield that the forest can maintain indefinitely.

3 · Sustained yield and the normal forest · medium

A normal forest of 1200 ha on a 60-year rotation carries 300 m³/ha at rotation age. What is its normal annual yield?

  1. 360000 m³
  2. 6000 m³
  3. 300 m³
  4. 180000 m³
Answer and working

B. 6000 m³

Normal yield = (A/r) × V_r = 20 ha × 300 m³/ha = 6000 m³ a year. 360000 m³ treats the whole area as mature; 180000 m³ is the normal growing stock by the triangle approximation.

4 · Rotation: physical, silvicultural, technical, financial, maximum volume · easy

The rotation of maximum volume production is the age at which:

  1. Mean annual increment culminates
  2. Current annual increment first reaches its peak
  3. Stand volume reaches its absolute maximum
  4. Trees begin to produce viable seed
Answer and working

A. Mean annual increment culminates

Harvesting at the culmination of MAI maximises average volume per hectare per year. CAI peaks earlier; total volume keeps rising after MAI peaks.

5 · Growing stock, density and normal growing stock · medium

Using the triangle approximation, what is the normal growing stock of a 1200-ha forest with 300 m³/ha at a 60-year rotation?

  1. 360000 m³
  2. 6000 m³
  3. 180000 m³
  4. 90000 m³
Answer and working

C. 180000 m³

Gn ≈ A × V_r / 2 = 1200 × 300 / 2 = 180000 m³. 360000 m³ omits the halving; 6000 m³ is the normal yield; 90000 m³ halves twice.

6 · Increment and the felling cycle · easy

The felling cycle in a selection forest is:

  1. The number of trees felled in a single coupe in one season
  2. The rotation of the species divided by the number of compartments in it
  3. The interval in years between successive main fellings in the same area
  4. The time a felled log takes to reach the depot
Answer and working

C. The interval in years between successive main fellings in the same area

The felling (cutting) cycle sets how often fellings return to each part of a selection or irregular forest.

7 · Increment and the felling cycle · medium

Trees grow 0.8 cm a year in diameter. How long do they take to pass through a 10-cm diameter class?

  1. 12.5 years
  2. 8.0 years
  3. 1.25 years
  4. 80 years
Answer and working

A. 12.5 years

Passage time = class width ÷ annual growth = 10 ÷ 0.8 = 12.5 years. 8 multiplies instead of dividing.

8 · Yield regulation by area · medium

The main weakness of the simple area method of yield regulation is that:

  1. It cannot produce a normal series of age classes even after one rotation
  2. Annual volume varies with the stocking and site of each year's coupe
  3. It requires a full volume inventory of every tree before each felling
  4. It can be applied only to selection forests with many age classes
Answer and working

B. Annual volume varies with the stocking and site of each year's coupe

Area control guarantees regular structure but not even volume. It needs no volume inventory and suits clear-felling and coppice.

9 · Yield regulation by volume and increment (e.g. Von Mantel, Hufnagl, Austrian formula) · medium

Using the Austrian formula Y = Ia + (Ga − Gn)/a, with actual increment 4500 m³/yr, actual growing stock 150000 m³, normal growing stock 180000 m³ and an adjustment period of 20 years, what is the annual yield?

  1. 6000 m³
  2. 3000 m³
  3. 4500 m³
  4. 1500 m³
Answer and working

B. 3000 m³

Y = 4500 + (150000 − 180000)/20 = 4500 − 1500 = 3000 m³. Adding the deficit instead of subtracting gives 6000; 4500 ignores the correction; 1500 is the correction alone.

10 · Multiple-use and ecosystem management · medium

Joint forest management in India was launched nationally by:

  1. The Indian Forest Act of 1927
  2. A Government of India circular in 1990
  3. The Wildlife (Protection) Act of 1972
  4. The National Forest Policy of 1894
Answer and working

B. A Government of India circular in 1990

The 1990 circular provided for sharing protection responsibilities and benefits of degraded forests with village committees.
