An elective ovariohysterectomy in which the uterus is entered without spillage, in a healthy bitch, is classified as which surgical wound class?
A. Clean-contaminated
Entry into the urogenital, alimentary or respiratory tract under controlled conditions without unusual spillage is clean-contaminated. Many students call an OHE 'clean', but the uterus is part of the urogenital tract; 'contaminated' needs gross spillage or a major break in asepsis.
A dog bitten by a larger dog has two small skin punctures on the thorax. What is the most appropriate approach?
B. Explore the wound under anaesthesia because deep crushing and tearing may lie under small punctures
Bite wounds show the 'iceberg effect': small skin holes may hide extensive muscle damage, and thoracic bites can penetrate the chest. Primary closure of punctures traps bacteria; topical treatment or antimicrobials alone miss devitalised tissue that must be debrided.
The general rule for immobilising a long-bone fracture with external coaptation is to include:
C. The joint above and the joint below the fracture
Coaptation must immobilise the joints above and below to neutralise bending and rotation at the fracture; a splint over the bone alone acts as a fulcrum.
A chemical indicator tape on the outside of a sterilised pack has changed colour. This shows that:
C. The pack was exposed to a sterilising process, not that its contents are sterile
External tape only distinguishes processed from unprocessed packs. Conditions inside are checked with internal chemical indicators; sterility of the process is confirmed by biological indicators. A wet or torn pack is contaminated regardless.
For suturing intestine, the needle of choice is usually:
C. Taper-point
Taper-point (round-bodied) needles spread rather than cut tissue and leave small holes in soft tissue like intestine. Cutting needles are for skin and dense tissue.
A dog with rectal prolapse has the prolapse reduced. Which suture is placed around the anus to prevent recurrence?
D. A purse-string suture, loose enough to allow defecation
A purse-string suture around the anus holds the prolapse reduced while still allowing soft faeces to pass. It must not be tied so tight that defecation is impossible.
Canine transmissible venereal tumour is usually treated with:
D. Chemotherapy with vincristine
TVT responds very well to vincristine; surgery alone has a high recurrence rate. Some tumours regress, but not reliably or quickly.
A 20 kg dog is estimated 8% dehydrated. What is its fluid deficit?
D. 1.6 L
20 × 0.08 = 1.6 L. 160 mL and 16 L are decimal slips; 2.5 L divides 20 by 8.
Which fluid is preferred to correct hypochloraemic metabolic alkalosis in a cow with abomasal displacement or a dog with pyloric obstruction?
A. 0.9% sodium chloride
0.9% NaCl supplies chloride and is acidifying. Bicarbonate and LRS (alkalinising) worsen alkalosis; 5% dextrose gives free water only.
