Question 1 · easy

Which pairing of country and wildlife maintenance host of bovine tuberculosis is correct?

  1. United States (Michigan) and the raccoon
  2. New Zealand and the brushtail possum
  3. Britain and the red fox
  4. Spain and the Iberian lynx
Answer and working

B. New Zealand and the brushtail possum

The brushtail possum maintains M. bovis in New Zealand. The badger (not the fox) does so in Britain and Ireland, white-tailed deer (not raccoons) in Michigan, and wild boar and red deer (not lynx) in Iberia.

Question 2 · medium

What is the role of cattle grazing in forests in the ecology of Kyasanur Forest disease?

  1. They shed the virus in milk, which is the main route to people
  2. They are dead-end hosts that die of haemorrhagic fever within days of the tick bite
  3. They feed adult ticks and increase tick numbers but do not amplify the virus
  4. They are the main amplifying host and develop high-titre viraemia
Answer and working

C. They feed adult ticks and increase tick numbers but do not amplify the virus

Cattle host adult Haemaphysalis ticks and so raise tick populations near villages, but they do not develop significant viraemia. Monkeys amplify the virus, people are the dead-end host, and milk-borne spread is not the recognised route.

Question 3 · easy

How is Trypanosoma evansi mainly transmitted between herbivores?

  1. By ticks that pass it through their eggs
  2. Cyclically, by tsetse flies in whose salivary glands it develops
  3. Mechanically, by biting flies such as tabanids and stable flies
  4. By mosquitoes that inject it with saliva
Answer and working

C. Mechanically, by biting flies such as tabanids and stable flies

T. evansi has lost the ability to develop in tsetse and is carried mechanically on the mouthparts of tabanids and Stomoxys flies. It is not tick- or mosquito-borne.

Question 4 · easy

In which year did CITES come into force?

  1. 1992
  2. 1975
  3. 1972
  4. 1973
Answer and working

B. 1975

CITES was signed in Washington in 1973 and came into force in 1975. 1972 is the year of India's Wild Life (Protection) Act, and 1992 is the Convention on Biological Diversity.

Question 5 · medium

  1. Two
  2. Six
  3. Four
  4. Eight
Answer and working

C. Four

The 2022 amendment rationalised the schedules from six to four: Schedule I and II for animals, Schedule III for plants and Schedule IV for specimens listed in the CITES appendices. Six was the number before the amendment.

  1. The Wildlife Crime Control Bureau
  2. The National Tiger Conservation Authority
  3. The Animal Welfare Board of India
  4. The Central Zoo Authority
Answer and working

D. The Central Zoo Authority

The Central Zoo Authority, set up in 1992 under the Wild Life (Protection) Act, recognises zoos and sets standards. The Animal Welfare Board advises under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, the WCCB tackles wildlife crime, and the NTCA manages tiger reserves.

Which IUCN Red List category represents the highest risk of extinction for a species still living in the wild?

  1. Critically Endangered
  2. Endangered
  3. Vulnerable
  4. Near Threatened
Answer and working

A. Critically Endangered

The categories rise from Least Concern, Near Threatened and Vulnerable to Endangered and Critically Endangered; Extinct in the Wild and Extinct follow. Critically Endangered is the highest-risk category for a species that still has wild populations.

Question 8 · easy

What is a chain of custody in wildlife forensic work?

  1. A continuous record of who held each item and when
  2. The order in which carcasses are opened during a mass mortality event
  3. A list of the species protected under each schedule of the wildlife act
  4. A legal agreement between countries on sharing seized ivory stockpiles
Answer and working

A. A continuous record of who held each item and when

The chain of custody documents every transfer and handling of evidence from collection to court so that its integrity can be shown. It is not a schedule list, a necropsy order or an international agreement.

Question 9 · easy

Why did Gyps vulture populations in South Asia collapse?

  1. They lost nesting trees after a ban on cutting cliff vegetation
  2. They were poisoned by lead shot in carcasses of deer and wild boar killed by hunters
  3. They ate carcasses of cattle treated with diclofenac and died of kidney failure
  4. They died of avian influenza carried by migrating waterfowl
Answer and working

C. They ate carcasses of cattle treated with diclofenac and died of kidney failure

Veterinary diclofenac residues in cattle carcasses caused renal failure and visceral gout in Gyps vultures, leading to a population collapse; veterinary diclofenac was banned and meloxicam identified as a safe alternative. Lead, influenza and habitat were not the cause.

A study plan for Wildlife, Zoo Animal & Conservation Medicine in RPSC Veterinary Officer

This plan follows where our questions actually fall, so the time goes where the marks are likely to be. It is our reading of the syllabus, not the exam body's weighting.

  1. First, the heavy units (60% of the 20 questions): Wildlife legislation (5, 25%); KFD and surra in wildlife (4, 20%); Wildlife forensics (3, 15%).

Read the manual chapters for these first and do every worked question you can find on them.

  2. Then the middle band: Zoo animal breeding (2, 10%); Zoo animal nutrition (2, 10%); Capture myopathy (1, 5%).

Aim for one sitting per unit, then mixed questions across them.

  3. Then the lighter units: Chemical immobilisation (1, 5%); Rabies and FMD in wildlife (1, 5%); Tuberculosis and anthrax in wildlife (1, 5%).

Learn the definitions, classifications and standard numbers; these units are more often recalled than worked.

  4. Bank the easy marks: Wildlife forensics (3 easy of 3); Zoo animal breeding (2 easy of 2).

Do these early in revision so they are fast on the day.

  5. Finish timed. Sit the subject as a timed set without notes, mark it, and send each wrong answer back to its unit above.
